John James "Buck"

Jane K. Slaughter
Pursley
Buck and Jane were quite different from their neighbors and family.  Jane was half Cherokee, a trait that wasn't so popular as it is now, so one didn't speak of it in her presence.  Buck taught Music and Penmannship in the Poplar Springs School and was a master carpenter.  He played Classical Violin, a talent that we are still not sure where he picked up.  He was also the local blacksmith in the White's Chapel community.  When it became apparent that a place of worship was needed, Buck, Daniel Stout and Jay White Pursley all pooled their resources and they built and donated White's Chapel Church to the community, to remain non-denominational so all could use it.

The 2nd sunday in May thereafter was known as
"UNCLE BUCK'S DAY"
and was celebrated with music and dinner on the grounds until his death in 1946.

Buck had his moods though, just like all the Pursley's.  He was nearly deaf and if he saw you laughing, he assumed it was at him.  You then "got a whippin" that you didn't forget.  His grandchildren learned not to smile in his presence too often.  He was a well liked and respected man.  Once his brother-in-law caught both men's sons out in the barn shooting dice.  Instead of punishing them himself, he went to the house and got Buck.  Though all of the boys were teenagers, Buck took a big switch and closed the barn door behind him.  My grandfather later related to me that this incident canceled all future prospects of gambling.

Buck had 1 pet peeve, and that was neighbor and relative Wood Stringfield.  You see, Wood picked the banjo, and teaching classical music, Buck hated banjo music.  He was once known to say that there wasn't anything any sorrier than a banjo picker.  So every sunday morning, Wood rang all the neighbors on the party line and played for 2 or 3 hours.  If Jane wanted Buck out of the house, she would say "Wood's gonna pick us a toon!"  and Buck would head for the barn.

Buck was also not much for sports.  Not at all like his son
