William Levy Matthews
Bill Levy as he was known,  was a comical sort of character in his own right.  Born in 1841, he spent the prime of his life watching the Civil War fought, with Barren Co.  on the line of both sides, while  the original Capital of the Confederacy lay in Bowling Green.
Bill is most probably the best representative of the old south you will ever see, pictured here with his dog "nigger".  In his time it was not quite the derrogatory term it is today, and was frequently given to animals
with a black coat.  When I think of Bill Levy, I can't help but think of a story that my grandfather told me about Bill and a man by the name of Ode white.  In the late 1800's, it was rumored in the White's Chapel community that if Ode didn't find anything to kill when he went hunting, he would kill your stock and take it with him.  One day, Bill Levy and his wife (Joicey Buckley) were eating dinner.  Ode drove through in his truck with his sons.  A short time later, shots were heard close to the house.  Joicey reminded Bill about the rumor going around, so Bill Levy took his 12 gauge and went to take a look.  He found Ode and his sons standing about 30 yards from his hog pen.  As I understand it, Bill Levy just stood there and starred them down.  Ode and his sons turned quickly and left.  The next day at John Barbour's store at Oleoak, Ode commented that when he saw Bill Levy, he made up his mind he was going to send him to the house.  But then Ode took a good look at Bill's eyes and decided that HE would be the one going home!
