I have a Router now and cant send or receive files anymore!
This is NOT an uncommon problem! This section is for CABLE/DSL/ISDN setups with a Router! You still might want to read the preceding section on DCC's though! Most Routers are preset to limit all but the most basic and often used functions. They'll allow access to Webpages, Email (sending and receiving) Some FTP (File Transfer Protocols) and others. What you have to do for DCC file sending & receiving is to open the specific Non-Standard ports that DCC uses in the Router. Now since there are many types and manufacturers of Routers out their, and alot of settings are different for P.C.'s, LANS, and WANS. This will have to be done in conjunction with your Routers User Manual. So get it out! If you dont have it, look up the Manufacturer and Model # of your Router online and see if there is a manual you can download.
Lets Try The Basics First!
Ok, to start with, your mIRC DCC ports must be set properly. The default mIRC port settings are too broad! We need to narrow them down!

Go to
View/Options/DCC/Options in mIRC. On the right side you will see DCC Ports with windows for First and Last. Usually mIRC sets these values to 1024 for First and 5000 for Last...this is too wide a range. DCC works much better in a narrower range. Set the First port to 4990 and the Last to 5000 and click ok. 10 ports is plenty! While you are in this window also check the TIMEOUT settings! Try sending something first once these are set! Many Routers will allow these ports access! If not, then continue

Now REMEMBER these port numbers. You will need to open THAT exact range in your Router!
On to the Router!
Most Routers today are assessable directly through your Internet Browser! (Some may have configuring software) They have a Firmware chipset that maintains the settings you program in! Look in your Manual under Logging Into Router (or equivilent) usually you can open your Internet Explorer, and in the Location line (where you type in webpage addresses) you can type in  Http://192.168.0.1 (or) Http://192.168.1.1 (these are US standards) In Britain, Australia and some other Asia/Pacific countrys its Http://10.0.0.1 (or) Http://10.0.1.1 and pressing Enter. Your User Manual should have the Specific IP address to access the unit!

Once you hit ENTER you should get a Login Screen Asking for your Login Name and Password! These will also be found in your book! Again if you dont have it, or cant find it...here are some things to try! Most times the Default
LOGIN is Administrator or Admin and the PASSWORD is Password or PASS...(try UPPER, LOWER and First Letter Upper Case) or just leave empty and press Enter (No Password) If any of these work BE SURE TO SET A NEW PASSWORD to something you will remember! I cannot Stress this enough! Now sometimes people get Routers from others who DONT remember the password. Most ROUTERS have a very small recessed RESET button in the casing. Grab a pen, and click that RESET button and hold it for a couple seconds (Some are required to be powered on for this, others arent) And this will reset all the Routers settings back to Factory Defaults...including the PASSWORD!

Now if your logged in, you'll have some choices on your screen! We're looking for the
PORT FORWARDING selection (for you folks in the UK, Australia, Asia or Other Countrys it should be marked as PIN HOLE ASSIGNMENTS or something similar. This is where you will OPEN up those ports you just set in mIRC! When you find them you will probably have to ADD them to the list!

Now if the
Port Forwarding or Pin Hole Assignments allow for a RANGE to be set (This is where you can tell it you want ALL the Ports between 4990 and 5000 set) Set them like in mIRC...First Port is 4990 and the last is 5000 set the Protocols for TCP and UDP to on! This is for Incoming and Outgoing Traffic! All 10 ports are then open for mIRC to use!

If these functions
DO NOT allow for a Range...you will have to add ALL the ports in that Range manually! That means you will have to set each one! 4990, 4991, 4992, 4993, 4994, 4995, 4996, 4997, 4998, 4999 & 5000! Each one set for TCP and UDP traffic!

NOTE: While you are in here, look for a function called
REMOTE MANAGEMENT or REMOTE ADMINISTRATION. Find this and DISABLE it! Trust me on this! If you Router Default Password is still set and this function is on, someone CAN access your router from the outside and you just wasted your time trying to protect your computer!!!

When your done you need to SAVE the changes! You shouldnt have to reboot your computer! The Router will open these port up for immediate use! And that should be it! Go back to mIRC and give it a try! If it doesnt work, reopen the Router and Recheck the settings.
Were I to reccomend a Router to someone who has never used one...I would recommend the Linksys 1 Port Ethernet Router. They average about $50 and are very easy to use! Theyre sturdy and come with a built in 7 Layer Encrypted Firewall! Which is Firmware Updateable Online! I have one, and I love it! If you have or get one of these Routers, I can and WILL help you set it up like mine is! Just message or email me!
