What to do for fun in the sun...

A variety of great Day Trips are available near St. Simons.  To get

outside, consider Cumberland Island  (south on I-95) or Sapelo Island

(north on I-95).  Both require reservations.  The Okefenokee Wildlife

Refuge also is close by.  There are other historical sites in the area also.

If you prefer something less "natural", head north on I-95 or U.S. 17

to Savannah, about one hour away.  Discount shopping is available at

Prime Outlets on I-95 North at Darien.

Jekyll Island offers history as well as outdoor activities.  You can take

a tour of the historic district and learn about the millionaires who

vacationed there years ago.  Don't miss looking in on the Jekyll Island

Club Hotel or the new Sea Turtle Center.  There is also an 11-acre water park sure to keep kids of all ages busy for the day.

On St. Simons, you can't miss taking a tour of the Lighthouse, probably

the most famous landmark on the island.  Other sites not to miss are Fort

Frederica and Christ Church.  If you are interested, local author Eugenia

Price has written quite a few books that incorporate lots of local history.

The St. Simons Trolley offers a guided tour with history and folklore of

the Island.  There is also a new museum at the Coast Guard Station.

A variety of outdoor activities abound from bicycling to kayaking to

Dolphin Tours.

Salt Marsh Nature Tours will give you a personalized education on the

local history and ecology as well as the opportunity to see dolphins, birds

and sites from pontoon boats.

Island Dive Center offers the opportunity to take Scuba lessons and go on

local dives.

Coastal Watersports at the Golden Isles Marina has Sea Doos for rent.

Southeast Adventure Outfitters coordinate sea kayak tours as well as

daytrips to some of the local islands.

Ocean Motion offers quiet, relaxing and educational saltwater marsh kayak

tours.  We have done this and it's great fun for the whole family, even if you

have never been in a kayak before.

Bike Rentals:  Barry's Beach Service, Benjy's Bike Shop, Monkeywrench Bicycles and Wheel Fun Rentals.

There are plenty of biking/walking trails on the island, but you can't beat

the walk from East Beach to the Pier when it's low tide.  Get refreshed at one

of the village restaurants before heading back!

Mini Golf is available in the Pier Village and on Jekyll Island.

There are several day spas on the island if you are interested in manicures,

pedicures, facials, massages, etc. (and who isn't??) Lynne's favorite has

always been Tangles in the Redfern Village Shopping Center but there are many other salons to choose from.

Night Life

Casino Dinner Cruise out of Brunswick on the Emerald Princess.  Dining,

international casino action, entertainment and more.

For live music and dancing check out Ziggy Mahoneys at Bennies Red Barn (open

Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings). Another live music venue is Rafters

in the Village. Performances are usually listed in the local free papers that can

be found in many of the shops and restaurants around the island.

There is a seven screen movie theatre showing current movies and offering

bargain matinees daily.  Island Cinemas is located on Sea Island Road behind the

Harris Teeter grocery store in the Shops at Sea Island.  There is also a

Blockbuster for movie rentals in the Shops at Sea Island.

Village Events

At various times of the year, special events take place in the Pier Village.  These

include antique and craft shows as well as the summer concert series.  There is

always a special 4th of July celebration.

The best way to find out what is going on during your visit is to check out the

High Tide Guide and/or the local free papers that can be found in many of the

shops and restaurants around the island.
