"The Rise, Fall, And Rise Again Of One Of The Most Influential Pop-figures Of The 1960's:

A Fan's Perspective Of The Life Of Monkee Star, David Jones"

By: Abby Alterio

On December 30, 1945 an average, hormonal teenage female's dream came true. As the saying goes, "a star was born". David Thomas Jones was born in a modest neighborhood in Manchester, England. He was to be the only boy in a family of three girls. Raised by both his mother, Doris and his father, Harry, David was quickly shown the importance of family life. David's father worked for the British Railway system and as David states in his autobiography, "They Made A Monkee Out Of Me", he never quite knew what he did there. David's mother stayed at home and raised the kids. Her job was a tough one at that, for David tended to be ornery right off.She also figured the bills for the family. When David was of school age, he often joked with the teachers and didn't take his "role" as a student very seriously. Once, his geography teacher asked him why he was late for class and he replied rather sharply, "I got lost trying to find the room." It wasn't until around his early teen years that he actually found something he was good at and cared about. Horses became his number one passion. Around 1961, he was introduced to his first chance at being in a stable. He was the perfect height at four feet and five inches. In fact, he even started training to eventually become a jockey. At this time, being a jockey may have seemed to fit his size but a different job was coming up that would be more fitting to his personality.

In 1963 he auditioned for the role of the Artful Dodger in the Broadway musical, "Oliver". Here was this "Manchester boy" who had very little stage experience except for a few small parts he did in school plays. He was trying out for a very big part! It seemed there was no match for this part...it was made for David Jones! David had to learn the "cockney" accent which he eventually perfected. It seems he and the Artful Dodger shared a common bond of being mischievous and it didn't take long before David got a Tony Award nomination for the role in 1963! One of the most interesting things about David's interesting career is that his very first television appearance in America happened to be on the same "Ed Sullivan Show" that the Beatles made their first American appearance on! It appears that from the very beginning, this boy was guaranteed success.

Around the time of his "Oliver" fame, David was signed on to a record deal with a company called Colpix, which happened to be Columbia Pictures' label. This would be the same company the Monkees had their records released on. David Jones had a contract with the company and then formed his first album titled, "David Jones". Creative title, huh? His very first single from the album was called, "What Are We Going To Do?" and David was left to wonder what he was going to do as he sat here in America, a land that soon became his home away from home. He didn't have to stir too long, however, because he was soon offered a part in an upcoming TV series about four insane boys who were in a band and lived together. In America, the British music invasion was hitting hard and due to the fact that David happened to be of this nationality, and was pretty cute to top it off, Columbia Pictures wanted him desperately. Not only that, but he already had a contract with them through his first album. He did a few TV acting appearances here and there and then went on to the next role which would be one he'd play for the rest of his life. From this point on, David became Davy and he was forced to become a member of one of America's hottest music groups, the Monkees. Continued HERE
