Glascock/Warren County Connection of the Davis Family
The following represents information I have gathered from Glascock County and Warren County records. I owe a debt of gratitude to several of my cousins who have provided valuable leads in their research efforts of years past. The primary sources for this information are 1) the oral and written history provided by family members, 2) the census records and other information for Glascock and Warren counties currently available on the Web and 3) the files of our cousin Ozzie Davis. I am currently reviewing the Ozzie Davis files to update this page.  His valuable research was done in the 1960's and includes copies of some public documents from Warren and Glascock counties.  Please understand that this is a work in progress and your suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated.
My editorial notes provide clarification or note pending research.
Warren County
Warren County was established on December 19, 1793 by an act of the Georgia General Assembly, and was created from parts of Columbia, Hancock, Richmond and Wilkes counties. Georgia's 20th county was named for Revolutionary War hero, General Joseph Warren, who was killed in the Battle of Bunker Hill. Glascock county was formed from Warren County.
A soldier found buried in Warren County who fought in the War for American Independence is named David Davis (there is also a Nathan Davis). I'm not sure if there's any connection to our Davis clan. More research to follow...

Glascock County
Glascock County is in eastern Georgia about 35 miles southwest of Augusta. With it's area of only 144 square miles, it is the 3rd smallest county in the state. And with it's population of 2,300, Glascock County is tied with Webster County has having the state's 2nd smallest polulation. It was formed in 1857 as the result of a bill introduced into the State Government by Wiley W. Kitchens, representative and resident of the southern part of the county.
Prior to then it was a part of Warren County, with the county seat at Warrenton.

NOTES:
1. This provides some valuable information, but also leaves some unanswered questions. "Lewcresa Davis" is better known to us as "Lucretia Davis" from previous family history. The misspelling of her name here was probably caused by the fact (according to census records) that she was unable to read or write.  Based her age at the date of this census, she was born in 1827 or 1828. Also, information from the Ozzie Davis files lead us to the Johnson county census of 1870 which shows a "Cretia" Davis of the appropriate age living there.  We are continuing to investigate a possible connection.
2. No father or husband is listed in this house. This makes it difficult to positively confirm the identity of Lewcresa's husband. From family history, we know his name was Joseph "Jugger" Davis. There was a Joseph Davis listed in this census (see House 15 below). Although it seems hard to imagine in 1860, based on the date of Joseph Davis' marriage to Rebecca Newson (October 1858) it is possible that this Joseph Davis was previously married to Lewcresa (aka Lucretia) Davis. The fact that the youngest son was named Joseph also adds to the circumstantial evidence.
3. According to information  obtained from the files of our cousin, Ozzie Davis, Joseph (aka "Jugger" or "Juggie") Davis was married to Lucretia (aka Lewcresa) Davis.  His source for this information is a personal interview with David L. Davis and Jeremiah W. Davis conducted in 1957 at Blun, GA.  During this interview, the Davis brothers confirmed that Joseph Davis' second wife was Rebecca Newson.
4. Recent contact with one of the granddaugthers of Lawson G. Davis' brother, Charlie (Charles), has also confirmed that Jugger Davis was the father of Lawson and his brothers.  She also confirmed from her family's oral history that Jugger Davis did divorce Lucretia and marry Rebecca Newson.  This totally independent confirmation from a previously unknown cousin provides good supporting evidence.

NOTE: Orpha Wilcher listed below is Lawson G. Davis' second wife. For me, this was a great discovery because it adds another generation to our family tree by extending the Wilcher line beyond Orpha Jane Wilcher (Jordan S. and Mary Wilcher). I am continuing to pursue the Wilcher line of descendents. I have recently trace the Wilchers back to additional generations.  Be sure to see the Davis Family Tree for more information on the Wilchers.

NOTE: Lawson Davis was working as a farm laborer for a Mr. Seaborn Sammons during this period. Three years earlier, Lawson had married his first wife, Rutha Glover (July 4, 1867). It is unknown if they were still married at this time. According to a previous written timeline of Davis history provided by our cousin Don Davis, Lawson did divorce Rutha. The files of Ozzie Davis also confirm this fact, although no date is available.
