Blun, Georgia - Where did it get its name?
The community known as Blun was originally named Wiggins Station after the founding citizens of the area, the family of John and Sarah Wiggins. There is no certainty about the origins of the name, Blun. However, it may have been named for Captain Henry Blun of Savannah. Interestingly, Captain Blun was both a Confederate officer serving along the Georgia coast and a blockade runner for the Confederate government. It is ironic that Sarah Wiggins claimed to be a Union loyalist who provided assistance to Sherman's army during the war. One possible explanation of the connection of the Wiggins family with Henry Blun is that about January 24, 1865, Henry Blun travelled via steamer from Savannah to New York and appealed to President Lincoln for permission to buy goods in New York City for resell in Savannah. His appeal was denied. It is possible that Sarah Wiggins and her children may have travelled to New York with Captain Blun.
