"It provides greater safety and no overtime costs. That is a dual benefit," Sheriff Rogelio "Roy" Dominguez said Wednesday while presenting his third status report regarding how his department in complying with the Good Government Initiative -- an efficiency push privately financed by the county's largest corporate taxpayers and supported by U.S. Rep. Peter Visclosky, D-Ind. It is the third time the sheriff has defended take-home cars since the Good Government study, published in early 2007, recommended replacing the vehicles with a pool of police cars used only by on-duty officers. The issue gained new relevancy this month because as the Lake County Council Finance Committee recommended eliminating all police take-home cars for a savings of $225,000 annually. The recommendation was among several the committee made in an effort to trim $15 million from current spending because of a property tax shortfall. The sheriff said he will oppose any effort to eliminate take-home cars for patrolmen. He dubbed the Finance Committee "an ad hoc committee to promote political agendas and save political jobs." The 2007 Good Government study concluded that police take-home cars cost the public more because the county needs to purchase and replace three times as many police vehicles at a cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars. The sheriff said he will soon post on his Web site an online "report card" regarding how he is complying with more than 40 other recommendations of the Good Government study. Thomas Dabertin, a consultant the sheriff paid $500 to report on Good Government compliance, said the report card won't give the sheriff a letter grade. But if pressed to do so, "He would get an A for what he has accomplished and his effort and commitment," Dabertin said. The Lake County sheriff's office is disputing a recommendation by the County Council Finance Committee that the sheriff could save $700,000 by restricting county police patrols to areas outside cities and towns. Marco S. Kuyachich, the chief of county police for Sheriff Rogelio "Roy" Dominguez, said this week his department "does not and never has routinely "patrolled" areas within any city or town in Lake County which has a municipal police department." Kuyachich said county police do patrol the town of Winfield because that town doesn't have its own police department. He said county police drug interdiction unit occasionally patrols interstate highways and the department will enter Gary and East Chicago when those city police departments request assistance. The savings is in the elimination of fuel and wear and tear during the off duty use of the vehicle. The greatest gift to improve the lives of the officers is to not require them to be on duty 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Remove the burden of take home cars and make the off duty time truly off duty. Having to respond to calls, assist motorists and perform other gas cars duties is just not right. Otherwise they would have to figure out how to pay the high gas prices like everyone else who drives their OWN cars to work. Only down side if they no longer have a take home car then they will up their WAGES to cover gas prices anyways... lets screw the people oout of their money so they can have it made...UMM NO " Geez wrote on Jul 31, 2008 8:02 AM: " These guys DO NOT get paid enough, this is the least we can do! You get what you pay for in everything including public safety. The more police cars on the streets, whether on duty or not, the safer the community is. All it takes is seeing the car, not actually knowing if the officer is on duty or not. Not to mention that these officers put their lives on the line everyday for VERY little pay. A take home vehicle is the least of my concerns for these fantastic officers who protect us and our communities. Keep the cars!
