Soc 321   Juvenile Delinquency

Unit 1      Introduction to Juvenile Delinquency

The first week of the semester is devoted to getting started with the basics for an online class.  You should bookmark/add to favorites/memorize) the Department of Sociology & Anthropology homepage address:

http://ulvsocanth.com

You will always* be able to find course webpages from there.
* Even after you finish the course! Students often come back for information for term papers, presentations for other classes, or just because they're interested in criminology. Site may be unavailable between terms.

You should go over all of the webpages carefully and make sure that you understand all requirements and scheduling for the class. You should print hardcopies of all of the pages (especially the weekly assignment pages!) and keep them together for quick reference.

Assignments for the first week of class:

Readings:            Chapter 1  (see course syllabus for information on the textbook)
Start reading the first half of Monster

Recipe for Juvenile Delinquency

Juvenile Offenders Do Not Fall From the Sky

You should take notes on all assigned readings - all assignments will be covered on exams!

Homework  (due each Sunday at midnight)

Chapter 1   Homework Questions

The homework assignment for this week is to answer the homework questions for Chapter 1 in the textbook.

In order to make sure that you get full credit for all homework, please include a heading on each homework with your name, the course number (Soc 321), and the Unit number (Unit 1 homework, Unit 2 homework, etc.).

Your answers should be justified by drawing on material from the chapters, rather than just "yes or no" answers or simplistic opinions, and your answers should be entirely in your own words (no quoting, no copy and paste!)

You should first read the assigned chapters, then copy and paste the homework questions into your word processor and answer the questions (one half to one page for each question), referring back to the book only as needed. Be sure to save your work on the computer where you can find it easily (usually in your My Documents folder). When the homework is finished, email it as an attachment to the professor at the address below. Be sure to put a heading on each homework!

Do not start with the questions and look up the answers without reading the chapters - this leads to low exam scores and low course grades. You need to study and understand the material in order to pass the exams.

Homework must be emailed as attachment to:   [email protected]
