Tournament Sparring

The LHCMAI trains students to participate in sparring contests. In northern California, there generally are several tournaments held through out the year. The LHCMAI has sponsored many tournaments at UC Davis since 1979. Also, the LHCMAI has sponsored and sent teams to major international tournaments in Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Although sparring rules may differ somewhat from tournament to tournament, they should be similar to the following list:

SPARRING RULES

  1. All competitors must wear either their own or the provided gloves and protective gear. Groin guards must be worn. Other guards and body-paddings that will not endanger the opponent are allowed and will be examined when necessary. Shoes are prohibited.
  2. All competitors must be in good health.
  3. After reporting to the judges, competitors must stand on the marks and give the necessary salutations before and after matches. A modest attitude must be attained.
  4. Each competitor should provide an assistant, with towels and water, who upon the beginning of competition must be removed and not be participating in any sense at all.
  5. All team coaches must report to the judges at least one hour ahead.
  6. All judges are selected by the tournament committee.

ILLEGAL MOVES

  1. Attacking a fallen opponent.
  2. Attacking opponent from a fallen position.
  3. Advancing before or after the judge's signal to begin or stop the competition.
  4. Insulting opponent or judges with any language.
  5. Resisting the judge's command.
  6. Kicking to the kneecap.
  7. Twisting the opponent's fingers or joints.
  8. Attacking with the forehead.
  9. Grabbing the opponent's clothing.
  10. Elbow or knee strikes to any part of face, head or neck.
  11. Intentionally removing opponent's guards or paddings.
  12. Carrying opponent with back.
  13. Any strikes to the eyes or throat or groin area.
  14. Spitting at opponent or judges.
  15. Biting any part of the opponent's body.
  16. Putting lubrication on any part of the body.

SCORING POINTS

  1. Unblocked kicks and punches to opponent's thighs, shoulder area and back: 1 point.
  2. Unblocked kicks and punches to opponent's front and sides, between the waist and bottom of neck: 2 points.
  3. Causing the opponent to fall to the mat: 3 points.
  4. Causing the opponent to step out of the ring: 3 points.

MATCH RULES

  1. Three rounds of two minutes each with a one minute rest between rounds.
  2. Points are totaled for each round and totaled at the end of the match. Fouls are deducted as points from the total and the winner is declared on basis of points or disqualification (multiple fouls).
