Herman A. "Jim" MEYER: m. Mary Francis EUBANK in Aug. 1935. They were the parents of six children: John, Barbara, Nancy, Buddy, Susan, and Fred. Mr. MEYER'S early jobs were with the Civilian Conservation Corps, and Sam G. Polino as the roads were being built either between Thomas and Parsons, or Parsons and Elkins. Jim dorve bus for MEYER Transit Co.; then he ran MEYER Motor Sales and MEYER Insurance Agency after his father died in 1933. For a time, he also owned the Pontiac dealership in Oakland that later became C & M Pontiac. The Davis Pontiac dealership was the oldest in the Pittsburgh zone at the time of his death in 1972. Mr. MEYER was on the board of Directors at the National Bank of Davis and also served more than one term as Mayor of Davis. As mayor, he gave the deed to the property to then Governor Marland for Blackwater Falls State Park. He was also on the Board of Education in Tucker Co. during the 60s. As an active member of St. Veronica's Catholic Church, Mr. MEYER helped to raise funds for new pews for the little church. He went door to door (and not always Catholic doors) to solicit the funds. He would have been shocked to know that the little church was closed and torn down less than 30 years after his death. He instilled civic pride in his children by emphasizing the need/right to vote and the need to serve the community where you live. (Submitted by Susan MEYER).

Robert CORNELIUS: died Feb 2003 in Leonardtown, MD. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII, landing in Normandy and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He was buried with full military honors in Prince George's County, probably at Washington National Cemetery near Suitland. (Will check this out for accuracy).

Margaret L. CALDWELL: Margaret Louise Calwell, 91, of Charleston, died December 21, 2007, in her home at Edgewood Summit in Charleston. Born Margaret Louise Walters on Feb. 28, 1916, in Davis, she was the daughter of Benjamin Thomas Walters and Ethel Digman Walters. Margaret was a 1937 graduate of Berea College in Berea, Ky., and it was there that she met her husband, William Stuart Calwell, Sr.  They were married on Aug. 21, 1939. She called her years at Berea her "golden period" where she embraced the school's motto, God Has Made of One Blood All Peoples of The Earth. After college, she was a social worker with the West Virginia Department of Public Assistance, and was based in Tucker County.  As a social worker, she visited families in coal camps, arriving in a used Chevrolet with mechanical brakes that would often freeze up in winter. In 1950, Margaret and Stuart moved to Cross Lanes, which, in those days, was a small rural community.  She helped organize the Cross Lanes Women's Club and served as its second president.  The cl8ub helped bring water and sewer service to cross Lanes as well as a stoplight to the community's main intersection.Margaret went on to become a school teacher and retired in 1985 after more than 30 years in the classroom.  She taught at Rock Branch Elementary School, Cross Lanes Elementary School and Andrew Jackson Junior High School. Margaret taught English at Andrew Jackson when it was a new, innovative school without classroom walls.  She loved the open classroom philosophy and was saddened the day when the walls went up.  She taught during the 1974 Kanawha County textbook controversy and believed that the textbook protests led to the demise of the open classroom philosophy at AJ. In her book, "Speak to the Past: A Memoir Fat with Words," she wrote, "the textbook controversy struck me squarely between the eyes and in the heart... I was astonished when many in our community allowed weeds of ignorance and prejudice to sprout with from their hearts." After retirement, Margaret became active in the League of Women Voters and was instrumental in the organization's First Vote program in local high schools.  She visited every high school in Kanawha County and talked to seniors about the importance of voting. For several years, Margaret also was a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House next to CAMC Memorial Hosptial. A life-long Democrat, Margaret also had a passion for politics and current events and enjoyed lively discussion with family and friends about politics and the state of world affairs. Growing up in Davis, Margaret  always appreciated the natural beauty of Canaan Valley and the Blackwater Canyon.  In her youth, she and her friends would often swim in the water beneath Blackwater Falls.  These experiences led her to become an avid supporter of The Friends of Blackwater, an organization dedicated to the preservation of the Blackwater CAnyon. To those she leaves behind, Margaret will be remembered as a loving mother, Grandmother and great-grandmother.  She was known affectionately as "Noony" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sons, William Stuart Calwell Jr. and Benjamin Cary Calwell, both of Charleston; daughters-in-law, Ann Moody-Calwell and Becky Calwell; grandchildren, Elisa Rushworth of Wisconsin, Emily Calwell of Indiana and Daniel Cary Calwell of Charleston; and great-grandchildren, Abigail Rushworth and Harry Rushworth of Wisconsin.  She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and by long-time friend and caregiver, Paul Chancy. The family also thanks caregivers Michelle Price and Rita Miller, whose round-the-clock care mad Margaret's last days comfortable. Margaret was buried Thursday, Dec. 27, in Davis Cemetery. (Parsons Advocate, 2 Jan 2008)
