WELCOME! Last year I set up this website and it was a big success in facilitating parent/teacher communication.  To further that aim all students will be required to have thier parent/guardian send me an email as their first assignment of the year.  I will add each address to my class list and send important updates and reminders throughout the year.  Communication goes both ways - I am ALWAYS looking for resources to use in class.  If you have an idea, materials or anything to contribute PLEASE let me know.  I am only one person but if all of us collaborate the sky is the limit!  And please do not hesitate to ever contact me with any questions or concerns, no matter how small...
There are three big requirements for my classes that you can help your child with at home:
1) Maintaining a notebook - 1" - 2" 3 ring binder which will house the course syllabus, a table of contents listing each assignment, and all graded work in the order it was assigned.  There will be pop notebook checks, with the first at the end of the first week.  You can easily check your child's progress by asking to see their notebook on a regular basis (as well as checking this website!)..
2) Daily current events quizzes - this takes a while for families unaccustomed to keeping track of world news to develop the habit of doing so.  This is a habit that will be not soon forgotten and hopefully will last a lifetime!  It is impossible to study the world and gain a real understanding without incorporating the current situation for each region we study.  I have left examples of quizzes from last year on the tab to the left for you to examine.
3) Homework for my classes will be to READ the corresponding sections in the book so that students will come prepared to contribute to class discussions.  I cannot emphasize enough how important reading the material at home is to a student's grade.  I believe I will have enough textbooks this year for each student to have a copy of the textbook to keep at home (keep it in a safe place please!).  If you can help your child to set aside just 15 - 20 minutes a night to read for this class the benefits will be evident.  Have them read to you in the car or you read to them.  I even have audio CD versions of the textbook that can be checked out!  Find a way to make sure this important activity takes place each night.  One of the biggest factors contributing to FCAT success is the amount of time students spend READING!!!

I receive MANY emails and phone calls about grades on Smartweb.  The grades on Smatweb are a work in progress!  Teachers are only required to have Smartweb current and up-to-date on progress report days and report card days.  All work is graded and returned to the student on a weekly basis and a quick check in a properly organized notebook should easily help you know exactly where your child is at, in conjunction with the list of assignments here and on your child's table of contents.  I do my best to get the grades in my book into the computer as often as I can, and make a special effort to post test grades the day after exams.  With the A/B day schedule comes double the number of students as every other teacher on campus so it takes a little longer to manage double the number of papers to grade and grades to calculate and post.  Feel free to email me if you need a more specific update!

WAYS TO PREPARE FOR A TEST:  Visit Classzone.com - the flip cards, the quizzes and the crossword puzzle clues on that site are all a great way to study.  Another way to prepare for the test is to quiz your child off of the section review questions in the textbook for each section.  They will have the answers to the questions in their notebooks on their completed assignments.  Which brings me to the fact that there will also be a notebook check as well.  Students are welcome to archive the papers in their binder from the first term BUT they must keep them for review for the final exam!  All work for the sections are due on the day of the test and will no longer be accepted after the exam.  I will work on having Smartweb up to date the day after the test.  Remember to study for the map portion of the test as well.  There are many fun links to quiz them on the maps posted on the tab to the left, such as www.sheppardsoftware.com
