MY EXPERIENCE IN CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIP HUNTING
To tell you the truth, I applied for Chevening scholarship several times. Did you know that Chevening is the scholarship to study in the United Kingdom? Many people in Indonesia applied for Chevening each year. There are around 7,000 applicants each year.
In 1999 I was lucky enough to see Imam Nur Aziz, an alumnus of UNDIP majoring in Communication. When I met him, I knew nothing about internet and email. He told me to have an e-mail address and went to the internet cafe to register. Next, I went to the internet cafe in Telogobayem behind BRI on Jalan Pandanaran in 1999. At that time, I had no idea of registering an email address. I asked an internet attendant there and he was willing to help.
In 2001 after graduation I applied for Chevening scholarship. This was the first time I applied for it. I filled out the application form by using a black pen. At time time I took Teaching English as a Foreign Language. However, I was not lucky this time. I was not invited to attend the English test. Next, in 2002 I applied for it again. I filled out the application form. After that, I sent it by e-mail. I took British Studies. I thought I had to choose a major that many people didn't take it so that I didn't have many competitors. Fortunately I was invited to attend the English test in Jakarta although I chose Yogyakarta as the location of the test. I knew the invitation on Sunday by e-mail and the English test was on Tuesday in the beginning of March in 2002. I prepared myself and went to Jakarta on the following day. I stayed at my uncle's house. My uncle, Sukirman was very kind. He welcomed me in his house. I stayed there for two weeks since the interview was next week after the English test. In June 2002 I waited for the announcement. I got a letter from the British Council telling that I was not successful in the interview. I was sad, but I won't give up. In 2003 I applied for it again. I filled out the application form. I just corrected some grammatical mistakes and I attached the rejection letter I got. I waited for the English test. Luckily I got an invitation again and had to attend the English test on May 8th, 2003 in Meulia Purosani Hotel, Yogyakarta (see the enclosed photos above). There were two kinds of English tests each year. In Yogyakarta, there were 150 applicants invited for the English test. First, there were two kinds of English test, i.e. ABC test and DEF test. There were 30 numbers in each test. Next, those passing the tests could go on doing an essay writing test based on the topic given by them. Each applicant had a various topic. I passed the English test and became the first person to be interviewed by two women at 1.15 at the business centre at the hotel. There was something strange in the Chevening round of 2003. According to Indah Kanna, a Chevening officer, there were only 4,000 applicants across Indonesia. Usually there were around 7,000 applicants each year.
Now, I am waiting for the announcement. Hopefully I will be successful this time. I just pray to God the Almighty now. But I am sure that some time I will be certainly successful. As people say, "when there is a will, there is a way".
