| Inferential Statistics are used to make a staement about a characteristic of the population, based upon the a data sample from members of that population. This is used due to the impossibility of gathering data from an entire population, even if relatively small in number. For inferential statistics to be valid, the data must be gathered from a random sample of that population. More on random sampling in another section. |
