I have found very little information about my McElfresh family.   We go back to about the middle 1700's and all I have is a gentleman's name GARRISON McELFRESH.   We don't know where he was born nor when he died, or where he lived.   We don't know his wife's name and the only child that we have found of theirs is my 2nd Great grandfather, JOSHUA HAMPSHIRE McELFRESH.

Joshua and Mary McElfresh...

JOSHUA HAMPSHIRE McELFRESH was born March 14, 1817 in Coshocton County Ohio.   He married MARY MELVINA VAN HORN on November 22, 1854 in Morgan County Ohio.   I have copies of discharge papers stating that he was in the Civil War.   He was a private in Company D, 32 Missouri Infantry.   He lived to be over a hundred years old and in his later years enjoyed going to the County Fairs because he always won the gold handled cane they always gave the oldest resident.   Nothing is known of Mary Van Horns family.   She died on November 12, 1911.   Joshua Hampshire died Sept. 23, 1917, both he and his wife are buried and Honey Bend Cemetery in Montgomery County Illinois.   They lived a mile north of Farmersville, Illinois, and their land today is on the west access road of Highway.

Children of Joshua and Mary McElfresh are
THOMAS GARRISON McELFRESH born January 16, 1857.   Jerome Finton McElfresh he was born Feb. 15, 1851 in Ohio, he died Aug. 13, 1919.   Adam McElfresh born 1860 and died Sept. 27, 1940 in Montgomery County.   Marvin McElfresh born 1865 he died Nov. 11, 1931 in Montgomery County.   Flora McElfresh she was born Feb. 24, 1867 in Pleasant Hill, Illinois, she died about 1925.   Charles D. McElfresh dates are unknown.   Lucy Susie McElfresh no dates for her.   Edith McElfresh, born 1866 in Zanesville Twp. Montgomery County Illinois.   S.N. McElfresh dates unknown.

Joshua McElfreshs will is located in Montgomery County Courthouse, book or page E 96

Thomas and Mary McElfresh ...

THOMAS GARRISON McELFRESH
was my Great grandfather, he was born January 16, 1857 in Ohio.   He married MARY ELIZABETH BANDY January 2, 1879 in Montgomery County Illinois.   Mary was the daughter of Louis Bandy and Margaret Blue Bandy.

Their children were Birdie McElfresh born Aug. 15, 1879, he died March 10, 1907.   Dove Alice McElfresh born October 2, 1880.   Madgedelen McElfresh, born Aug. 8, 1882.   Ralph Roy McElfresh born April 13, 1884, he died Oct. 28, 1886.   Mary Grace McElfresh born Aug. 7, 1886.   Charles Walter McElfresh, born May 16, 1888.   My grandmother
NELLIE BLY McELFRESH born December 17, 1892.   Opal McElfresh born January 15, 1899.

The McElfresh family attended the Waggoner Baptist Church, which was next door to where they lived in Waggoner.   Mary joined the church on December 16, 1912 and was baptized on December 19.   Thomas and Mary McElfresh lived all their lives in the little town of Waggoner.   Their home was about three blocks east of the railroad track and just a half a block south of Main Street.   Thomas died on May 16, 1926, and Mary Bandy McElfresh died Dec. 5, 1928.   Both are buried in the Honey Bend cemetery Block 1, Lot 50.

Thomas McElfreshs will is in book E, page 159 in the Montgomery County Courthouse.

Nellie Bly McElfresh ...

NELLIE BLY McELFRESH grew up in Waggoner and after she graduated from school got a job as a telephone operator in Farmersville.   One afternoon a friend of hers, working beside her in the telephone office asked if she, instead of catching the train the six or eight miles back to Waggoner, might stay over that evening and theyd go to a dance at the school.   As she and her friend sat on a bench upstairs in the school, watching the boys as they came up the stairs, she asked if Verna knew a particular boy.   Verna laugh and said she sure did hes my brother thats SANFORD CLOW.

They started dating, and Sanford would ride the train to Waggoner from Farmersville, or rent a horse and buggy from the livery stable.   On February 17, 1914
SANFORD JOSEPHUS CLOW and NELLIE BLY McELFRESH were married in Springfield, Illinois.

Connie, a cousin sent me your web site, and we are distant cousins.  I see a lot of family resemblance. David Clow especially looks like members of my family.  My Mother was a McElfresh and we descend from David McElfresh an early 17th century settler in MD at London Town.

On Joan Leonard's site there is info on a related family to yours; see her web site for further info  http://www.mcelfresh.ws/

I am sure link into the same line as my family- even the names are the same.   All of the US McElfresh's seem to be descended from David of London Town.  I am sending Joan who is the expert on this McElfresh family.  There are some pictures of my family on her site, and you will see the resemblance of some of the older family members.  John Ogden (Alexandria, VA)

What does the name mean?
Last Name: McElfresh
Scottish (Western Isles): Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Gille Bhris, patronymic from a personal name meaning servant of (Saint) Bricius. This was the name of a 5th-century Gaulish saint whose cult was popular in Scotland in the 12th14th centuries.
The McElfresh Family: What About Us?
Everyone has a name. Each name came from somewhere.
The McElfresh name is rare. Ive never accidentally met someone with the name McElfresh, though others have introduced me to others with the same last name.

Every family has a history. Some can trace their family history back a few hundred years. As with most family names, McElfresh can be traced, but not too far.

The research Ive done to date indicates that the McElfresh immigrants came from Scotland. Early McElfresh settlers arrived on the east coast of the United States back in the mid 1700s, perhaps Maryland.

McElfresh as a name is patronymic** in origin, probably derived from other names. As best I can determine, McElfresh means the son of the servant of Bricius. He was a Gaulish saint.

Not ghoulish. Other spellings include Mackelfriesch. Thats ghoulish.

My fathers sister, Edna Woodward, has worked on a family tree for many years. Her work goes as far back as a John McElfresh who married an Ann Becraft in Montgomery, MD in 1817. He was the son of William McElfresh who was born in Maryland in 1789.

From then forward, the McElfresh clan moved into Pennsylvania, westward to Ohio, south to Kentucky, then Illinois, and Missouri. My grandmother on the McElfresh side came from a French family.

Origin: The McElfresh Name
MACLEFRISH, MACLEFRISK, A hebridean surname. Probably from M'Gille Brish, `son of the servant of (S.) Bricius.' Bricius was a Gaulish saint of the fifth century, and his name was a favorite personal name from 1100 to 1300. There was a culdee of this name, and a later Bricius (Brice) was bishop of Moray (1203-1222). Donald MacIleresch in Ulleray, North Uist, is recorded in 1718, and probably M"Illfrice of the Edinburgh Marriage records (1669) is the same name. Janet M'Lefrish in the parish of Shotts, 1710, and Isabel M'Ilfreish in Torphichen in the same year.

From the Surnames of Scotland, Their Origin, Meaning and History, by George F. Black PhD, The New York Library, 1962 (929.4 B561)

MacDonald of Sleat Tartan
MacDonald of Sleat motto
"By Sea, By Land"
There are several variants of the McElfresh name including: Maclefish, Macklefish, McElfish, McLefresh, McKelfresh, and McLish. If you bear this surname, no doubt you have heard numerous odd pronunciations of it. I would suspect that scribes from the early days had much the same difficulty and so we find the name recorded with numerous spellings. The McElfreshes have been adopted, so to speak, by the Clan Donald and thus may claim the MacDonald of Sleat tartan and crest.

Many of the McElfreshes in the United States can trace their ancestry to David Macklefresh, who came to America from Scotland. David settled in Maryland in the 1690's and he was Lord Mayor of London Town, MD at the time of his death in 1710. His position as Lord Mayor may have been simply due his ownership of a majority of London Town's property at the time and not necessarily an official title bestowed upon him.

London Town was located 5 miles south of Annapolis, MD at 38 deg 56 min 00 sec North,76 deg 32 min 59 sec West. . It was established in 1683 as a tobacco inspection port and had a population of 300 in 1725.

There is now going on in London Town a singular effort to unearth the story of that town and the people there. David Mackelfreish is one of the earliest and more prominent citizens, having been a landholder, merchant, tavern owner and ferry operator there in the 1600s. There is a Macklefish (sic) Street there. The London Town Foundation, in cooperation with Anne Arundel County is conducting an archealogical/historical "dig". Their mission: "To research, explore, and teach Tidewater history through the story of the Lost Towns of Anne Arundel. The Foundation will preserve its historic, archaelogical, and horticultural components to the highest standard . . ." In short, the Lost Towns project will unearth the old building sites of London Town, reconstruct some of them, glean artifacts and develop the historical context of the origins of the Town and its people, including our David Mackelfreish. They have already identified and marked his house, the ferry landing, a tavern, carpenter shop and all sorts of pottery, glass, buttons, pipes, and other artifacts and are beginning to compile historical information about the development of the Town. They will be publishing a "local history study" pamphlet soon under the auspices of the Maryland State Archives. (Similar works have been done on Annapolis and Anne Arundel County and are for sale by the Foundation.)They also have a vision to reconstruct the Town as a "Williamsburg" type historical exhibit. Their address is London Town Publik House and Gardens, 839 London Town Road, Edgewater, MD 21037-2120. Membership is $25.00/year. Email: [email protected]

A McElfresh Map is like a chapter in American history spread out on one page.  Open it and you are hooked. The large, colorful maps are filled with gripping details of history. It's not a story written down, but a vivid paper graphic. The particulars are there for you to explore.
The famous battlefields of the Civil War including Gettysburg, Manassas, Antietam and many more are available at low cost and in colorful detail. A wide range of information and rare, carefully selected photographs and period maps are included on the reverse side of each map. The maps are a renowned resource for studying battles or as an accompaniment on a battlefield visit.

The maps are produced by Earl B. McElfresh, cartographer and map historian, who authored and compiled Maps and Mapmakers of the Civil War, Harry N. Abrams, 1999. For more information on the book please go to News.  For more information on our maps visit our Products page.

The map to the left is a study draft for the map "Lewis and Clark and the Louisiana Purchase 1803-1806." It depicts New Orleans and Environ in 1804.  It is from the archives of  McElfresh Map Co., LLC.

In Reply to: Henry G. McElfresh b. 1835 in Morgan Co., OH d. 1892 by Darline Duncan  of 186

Henry G. McElfresh was the son of James McElfresh and Katherine Mullanex. James was born in Anne ArundelCounty, MD in 1799 and he died in Morgan County, OH in 1848. Katherine was born about 1801 and died before 1847 probably in Morgan County, OH. James and Katherine were married in Baltimore County, MD in 1820. By 1830 James was in Richland, Belmont County, OH and by 1840 he was in Union Township of Morgan County, OH. James' second wife was Margaret Van Horn; they were married in Morgan County, OH in July of 1847. They were the parents of Catherine Anna McELfresh, who was born the same year James died.

Work goes as far back as a John McElfresh who married an Ann Becraft in Montgomery, MD in 1817. He was the son of William McElfresh who was born in Maryland in 1789.

From then forward, the McElfresh clan moved into Pennsylvania, westward to Ohio, south to Kentucky, then Illinois, and Missouri.

In Reply to: Joshua Mcelfresh b. 1817 was his father Garrison by David Clow  of 189

I have a Quiller Garrison McElfresh who was born in 1801 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Garrison was a brother to my ancestor James McElfresh. Garrison was married three times. His first marriage was in 1826 in Belmont County, Ohio to Hannah Devore. Their children were: John D. b. 1827, Henry Wm, b. 1832, Adam b. 1835, Newton b. 1839, Joseph b. 1839, Ruth Ann b. 1841, Elizabeth Hannah b. 1843. His second marriage was to Harriett Manley Mingus in 1847 in Morgan County, OH. Children from this marriage: James Evan b. 1847, Martha b. 1849, Quiller Garrison b. 1854, Nathan b, 1855, William b. 1856. His 3rd marriage was to Lidy Ledbetter in 1867 in Dent County, MO. I do not have Garrison's date of death. A Joshua McElfresh is residing next door to Garrison McElfresh on the 1860 census in Dent County, MO census, leading me to believe that he was likely a son - he was listed as age 30 in 1860, which would fit in time frame of the birthdates of Garrison's other children. However, you list your Joshua's birthdate as 1817 - a 13 year difference. If he wasn't a son, I would still think he is somehow closely related. I can provide more information on Garrison's ancestry, if you think this Garrison is the same as yours.
I believe Mary Alvina Van Horn may have been a daughter of Thomas Van Horn. Elizabeth Van Horn, who I believe was Alvina's sister married William R. McElfresh, the eldest son of James McElfresh.

Your Joshua was born in Coshocton County, OH, which isn't too far from
Belmont County, OH, so this piece of the puzzle could fit in with
Garrison's migration pattern.  I hope this informatin helps you determine if
Joshua belongs to Garrison.  My ancestor James McElfresh (Quiller Garrison's
brother) had a son, Henry G. McElfresh.  I have always felt the G. stood for
Garrison, but never have found any proof, it's just a hunch.

Below you will find a short sketch of our family history.  If there is
anything you want a more detailed account of, let me know, and I will
do the best I can to give the information.

                                              Truly Yours.  W A.McElfresh

William McElfresh, a farmer and minister, and Adam Scott, a farmer and
a blacksmith, was a soldier in the War of 1812, in the U.S. Army.  They
were born and raised and Ellicotts Mills, near Baltimore, Md.  They were of
Scotch decent and ardent members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.  In
1822 they migrated to the then Land of Promise, and settled on McMahans
Creek Belmont County, Ohio more than 300 of the 400 mile journey was through
an unbroken wilderness, only a wagon trail.  Each of them raised large
intelligent families.

A son of said William McElfresh named Joshua Hanson, was born March 8, 1814, and
a daughter of said Adam Scott named Mary Ann was born May 9, 1813.  They were married March 12, 1835, in 1840, they located on a farm near Stafford, Monroe County, Ohio, where said Mary Ann McElfresh died March 1, 1891.  And said Joshua H. McElfresh died Feb. 5, 1899.
Their children were Harriet Elisabeth McElfresh Wilson, born April 19, 1836,
died July 22, 1853.  Adam N. (sic) born April 12, 1839, died April 8, 1911,
a farmer.  William Avery, born Jan 1, 1842, teacher and insurance agent,
served in Co. D 27th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Civil War, a
private, living at Caldwell, Ohio.  Sara Jane born Sept. 9, 1844 died Sept
20, 1844.  Mary Jane McElfresh, born Oct 17, 1845, living at Stafford,
Ohio. Joshua Evan, born Sept. 4, 1848, died Sept. 19, 1898.  Teacher and
farmer. Henry A., born May 9, 1851, living at Ravenswood, W. Va. farmer and
dealer in real estate and live stock.  Susan A. born Jun 1, 1855, died July 4,
1855.  My Grandfather Wm. McElfresh, lived to be 75 Yr old, and my
Grandfather, Adam Scott, lived to be 89, the McElfresh family, so far
as I know are generally healthy and long lived.

This is a true copy of the original letter as obtained from Wm. Avery
McElfresh's great grandson, Donald McElfresh of Caldwell, Ohio.    July, 1978 -
John D. L. Ogden

William McElfresh is buried at the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Franklin Township
(Hanson Ridge), Monroe County, Ohio.  He died January 18, 1847, aged 75
years and 9 days.  His stone is marble but badly cracked at the bottom.
"When my Grandfather (Allen McElfresh) and I first relocated the stone,
it had nearly toppled over.  We returned with my brothers Gregg and Kirk
in June of 1969 and reset the stone and the base.  Next to his grave is a
depression but no stone; perhaps, his wife Elizabeth Bigely (?) is
buried there.  This cemetery is located on a hill above the valley where
William and his family first settled and built their log cabin.  William is
known to be the Father of Joshua Hanson (8 Mar 1814-25 Feb 1899), and he is
thought to be the father of Nathan (ca 1804) and Henry W. (12 May 1818-12 Oct
1870) and probably several other children.  Since William was a minister it
is presumed he may have preached at this church.  The Methodist Episcopal
Church that once stood here has now been torn down.  The cemetery is
abandoned, but it is relatively well maintained and is located on the
Roscoe Wilhelm farm."   John Ogden

Hi Cheryl,

You posted a reply to my brother (David Clow's) message on GenForum
about Garrison McElfresh. We feel this is probably our ancestor and I
would be interested in anything that you have on this family. We know
very little and have run into road blocks everywhere. In fact we did
not know he lived in Dent Co. MO. We have quite a bit of information
on Joshua H. McElfresh but very little on his father. I copied
information from Joshua's death record and it shows a Garrison as the
father. Please let me know how I can help you on the Joshua line.

While my brother is traveling I am at home updating information on the
computer. I am also in the process of getting war records for Joshua
for his part in the Civil War.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Connie,

Here is an outline descendent tree of Quiller Garrison McElfresh.  I  have included your Joshua in the tree, who seems to fit in with the birth order of Garrison's other children.

The source of my information on Garrison McElfresh was from Ray McElfresh.
Another source for the McElfresh ancestry was Judge Charles Moylan.

As I mentioned in my post, Garrison was a brother to my ancestor, James McElfresh.
I'll send some notes in a separate email.

When was Joshua McElfresh Born ???

If we beleave that Garrison and Hannah McElfresh are the father and mother of Joshua McElfresh then we must have a bad birth date for Joshua, 1817.

His parents didn't get married until 1826.

John, a brother to Joshua, was born in 1827 and  according to 1860 census Joshua was born in 1830.   In 1831 Henry is born.   1835 Adam is born .   1839 Newton and Joseph are born.   1840 Ruth is born.   1843 Elizabeth Hannah is born.

Joshua McElfresh is married to Mary A. Vanhorn November 22, 1854 in Morgan Co., Ohio.  She was born 1832, making her 22 years old, and Joshua 24.    If Joshua was b. in 1817 he would have been 37 years old.

Children of Joshua and Mary McElfresh are Thomas Garrison born January 1857 Morgan Co. Ohio.   Jerome Finton born 1851 in Ohio.   Adam born 1860 in Missouri.   Marvin 1865.    Edith born 1866 in Zanesville Twp. Montgomery County Illinois.   Flora born 1867 in Pleasant Hill, Illinois. Charles D. unknown.   Lucy Susie no dates for her.  S.N. McElfresh dates unknown.

In 1860 Joshua shows up in Dent Co Missouri and from the census records is living next door to Garrison McElfresh, his father. (he says he is 30 year old, birth in 1830)

In 1862, Joshua enlisted in Union for 3 years, probably about 32 years old.   When he was discharged in Aug. or Sep. 1863 papers show his age as 36.   This would make him be born in 1826 or 1827.
If he had been born in 1817 when he enlisted he would have been 45 years old, and when most of the men were 18, 20, 25 years of age Joshua would have been called the old man even at the age of 32 let alone 45

David,
I was given some information about Joshua McElfresh & Mary A. Vanhorn's son Charles Augustus McElfresh - The gedcom I was given was put together by Velma DeMoulin Morton 1977-1980 -Velma has since passed away. Charles McElfresh was born February 25, 1867 in Montgomery county, Illinois and died November 30, 1953 from a blood clot in the brain - He is buried in Rosedale Cemetery, Adams county, Nebraska- Two of Charles sons Willis leroy McElfresh & William Vernie McElfresh are buried in the Raymond City Cemetery in Raymond, Illinois- They died very young. His daughter Tossie Lavona McElfresh married 3 times 1st to Albert E. Demoulin and 2nd to Albert Brown and 3rd to John Pankua-Would be glad to give you the descendants if you would like- I checked your website out and it is nice.

Misc. Information on the
McElfresh Family
William McElfresh was born in 1771 in Montgomery County, Maryland, son of Richard and Susannah McElfresh. He married Elizabeth Bedson on August 8, 1795 and they raised a family of ten known children. William and his family did not move west as his father and brothers did at the turn of the century. This McElfresh family traveled west in the 1820's and settled in Belmont County, Ohio where William died in 1847.
Of the ten children of William and Elizabeth, seven have present day descendants, including me, researching their lines. What we have done here is to create a page for each researcher to share their McElfresh discoveries in their line. Each child of William and Elizabeth is listed below, just click on the child's name to go the page about that child and their descendants.
