| The MANN family has the distinction of being a very ancient family. The name was first found in the Doomsday Book records. My forefathers were described as being very honorable and influential, and with a fine patriotic record. The name Mann was used in England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Holland, and Germany in the thirteenth and fourteenth century. It is unique in the fact that it applies to highest nobility, and all the way down to the most humble pauper at the same time in history. Baron Mann was at the height of power in Linton, England, and at the same time Andro Mann was executed for witchcraft in Aberdeen. Nobleman Count Cornwallis, his surname Mann, was controlling large sections of population for the British Empire. Contrast that to a humble 17 year old girl huddled in the hole of a sailing ship crossing the Atlantic Ocean on her way to America. Ann Mann arrived in America on May 2, 1635 and we do not know what became of her. Count Cornwallis handed his title over to his son and this conversion continued for over two hundred years when the title became extinct in 1858. A case of two different worlds. The Isle of Mann is a dominion of England, and the coat of arms is said to have been brought from Sicily by the Vikings at a very early date. In the early records Mann was spelled Man, but in this country it seems to have changed about the same time as the American Revolution. The most common spelling today is Mann. Benjamin Mann in Kentucky ... We find my earliest Mann family in Kentucky in 1790. This is the first Federal Census of the United States. We find Benjamin Mann in Fayette County Kentucky, this census came from a tax list and it�s dated January 11, 1790. BENJAMIN MANN was born in Wales, he came to Virginia and fought through the American Revolutionary War. He married MILLIE TIMBERLAKE and had 23 children. After the Revolution he moved to Lexington, Kentucky, them to Campbell County, Kentucky near Alexandria. Among his children were Richard Mann born in Virginia, Thomas Mann Elijah Mann, Tannie Mann, ARCHIBALD MANN, my 4th Great grandfather, Susan Mann, Sarah Mann, Lucy Mann, Peggy Mann, Nancy Mann, William Mann, James Mann, Francis Mann, Benjamin Mann, and others. The descendants are numerous in Kentucky and adjoining state. Richard Mann an extensive farmer was one of the first men in Pendleton County, Kentucky, acquired about seven hundred acres all under cultivation. Elijah Mann was a principal of Haroldsburg Classical and Commercial College, and a brother to Eli B. Mann who moved to Indiana. The Manns moved to Indiana sometime during the 1850s. In a court record in Fayette County, Kentuckey September 21, 1793. Benjamin Mann is listed as a witness for the Rev. John Todd and his wife Margaret Todd. Efforts of Benjamin Mann to receive his pension, an official record is found in Pendelton County Kentucky. Benjamin Mann on June 16, 1818 at the age of sixty-eight years appeared in open court and stated that he was a resident of Campbell County Kentucky. He being duly sworn according to law makes the following declaration. He stated and swore that he was drafted into the regular service, Revolution War, for a term of 18 months in Louisa County Virginia. Again on October 25, 1890 John Trimble states that it is to his satisfaction that the said Benjamin Menn did serve in the war of the Revolution for a period of nine months and that he is in reduced circumstances. Another witness William Kennett certifies that the said John Trimble was Judge of the County Court. Eli Edmund and Philip Timberlake certify that they are well acquainted with Benjamin Mann and they know him to be trustworthy and that credit is due to him and that he is infirm and unable to labor. Signed by Edmund and Timberlake. The Kentucky Rolls list Benjamin Mann as a private in the Revolutionary War he was inscribed on the Rolls March 14, 1820, dropped off the Rolls July 16, 1821. On December 20, 1813 he married SABRINA TARVIN in Campbell County, Kentucky. The marriage certificate was filed in the Courthouse in Alexandria, Campbell Co. Kentucky. It shows Archibald�s father Benjamin, gave consent for the marriage of his son. The consent was also signed by Sabrina Tarvin. Children of Archibald and Sabrina were KETURAH R. MANN, my 2nd Great grandmother, born 1817, David O. Mann born 1822, Alfred Mann born 1829, Richard Caleb Mann born 1830, George Mann born 1832, Benjamin F. Mann born 1834, and Missouri born 1834. All these children were born in Campbell County. The Pleasant View Baptist Church was organized December 18, 1836. Mann and his wife Margaret Collins were in Shelby Co. children were Theodore, Archibald, and Elisha. The third Mann family was James Mann and his wife Elizabeth. Archibald and Sabrina were early pioneers in Moral Township, Shelby County Indiana. Some of their neighbors were Alexander and Fountain Means and George W. Holmes, who are all members of the family. Moral Township covers an area of six square miles, and in the early 1800s had five towns, Dobletown, Vinton, Pleasant View, Brookfield and London. In the 1860 Federal Census of Shelby Co., Archibald and Sabrina Mann are listed but showing no children. David Mann�s wife Margaret is gone and he�s married to James�s wife Elizabeth, James Mann is also gone. David Mann�s children are Theodore, John, and George. The Manns were in Indiana between the years 1848 through 1860. David Mann is buried in Carmel, Hamilton County, Indiana, he died Sept 12, 1912. Archibald Mann�s son Richard Caleb Mann is buried in New Palestine, Hancock Co. Indiana, he died May 12, 1901. Most of the Manns settled in Moral Township, Shelby County Indiana. The family story tells that after Arch. Mann�s wife died, sometime during the mid 1860s, Archibald Mann and his son David packed up the family and moved with the Joyces in a wagon train to Barton County Missouri. In the 1870 census of Barton County, David Mann is the head of the household, he�s 47 years old. He�s listed has a farmer, his wife is Elizabeth E. Mann 33 years old and their children are John 14, George 12, Ralph 11, Rose 5, Ruben 3, and Sallie 4 months of age, with David is his dad Archibald Mann my 4th Great grandfather age 77 years. After this census we loose track of both David and Arch. It is said that David Mann left, to unknown places, and we don�t know what happened to Arch. He could be buried in Forest Grove Cemetery in Barton County. The Tarvin family, and more precise Richard Tarvin, immigrated from England in about 1708, and settled in Maryland. They settled in the area of Port Tobacco, Maryland, where they raised tobacco for export to England. As the family grew and the pull of western expansion was felt the family began to move into the states of Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana. | Laura Dake Mann As a daughter of one of the first settlers of Moral township, Shelby county, Indiana, Mrs. Laura Mann, at present a resident of New Palestine, Hancock county, Indiana, ranks as a member of one of the leading families of early Indiana. She was born in Moral township, Shelby county, on December 12, 1862, and is a daughter of Benjamin Dake. (See his sketch on another page of this book.). She was married September 17, 1884, to Alfred H. Copeland, who was born at Pleasant View, Moral township. He was a son of Lewis and Eliza (Means) Copeland. The elder Copeland was an early settler of the township and was widely known throughout that county. Mrs. Eliza Copeland was a daughter of an old pioneer, Alexander Means, whose wife was Elizabeth Edwards. They were natives or Rockingham county, New York, and of virile Yankee stock. They were among the first settlers of Pleasant View, Shelby county, Indiana. One child was born to Alfred H. and Laura Copeland: Ebert Clarence Copeland, who married Bessie Smith, daughter of Austin C. Smith, whose sketch appears on another page of this work. They had two children: Thelma Marie and Alfred Austin, and live in Moral township. Alfred Copeland was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He died in 1890 and was buried in old Dake cemetery. In 1892 Mrs. Laura Copeland married Richard Mann, who was known as a progressive farmer and auctioneer of Moral township. His death occurred on May 12, 1901, and his remains were buried in Pleasant View cemetery. He was a member of the East Union Baptist church and a strong Republican in political faith. There were two children born to Mr. And Mrs. Richard Mann: Alta F. and Glenn Caleb, who still live with their mother. Mrs. Mann is noted as a Christian woman, kindly and neighborly, and with a large following of friends in the community in which she lives. He was married to Miss Jennie Hines in 1863, and to their union three children were born; Mrs. John [Luta Esther] Huhnke, of Hamlet, Indiana; John Mann of this city and Stanley Mann, at home. Besides these children and three grandchildren, Mr. Mann leaves two brothers; I. O. Mann, of Shelbyville, and Charles Mann, of Toledo, Ohio. He retired from active life about ten years ago. She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Luta Esther Mann, at home, two sons, John H. Mann and Stanley Mann, at home; and one sister, Mrs. Elbert Kaster, of Marion township. Mrs. Mann was a member of Wheat Sheaf Council, Degree of Pocahontas, and of the Protected Home Circle.
