From Elizabeth Brown  2001
I have information from BYERS family reunions that were held in Sangamon and Christian Counties, IL during the 1930's and 40's that say Margaret BRAMHALL was born in 1806 and died 18 Dec. 1838. They were married on the 25 Dec. 1825 in Jefferson Co., W. VA. I also have info that Abraham married Emily JACKSON on 10 Mar. 1841 in Madison Co., OH.

by (Mrs. William Joseph) Hilma BYARS

The history of the name Byars is interesting. The original spelling was BYERS. It has a geographical significance. It comes form the English "bere," meaning a wood. Thus we would have Elias de la BERE, meaning Elias of the wood. Again by uniting BY with the with the word following we have a designation of a wood, a grove, a quarry, a house, etc. Thus: BY plus AS gives BYAS: by a house. Bye may also mean a homestead. {1,2}

The family coat of arms is a game cock perched on a shield, with the inscription "Marte sec Tutus," meaning, "safe with his own spures. {3}" {4} It is presumed the family originally came from North Ireland. {5} There is a de BYARS listed on the role of Battle Abbey taken at the time of the Battle of Hastings in 1066. {6}

The early settlers of southwest Virginia came principally form the valley of Virginia, {7} western Pennsylvania and Maryland, some of them coming directy from Ireland. They were of a mixed race and a large majority were Scotch-Irish. {8}

There are many references to persons named BYARS in the history of Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina and on to the south and other points but our branch is first found in Hanover County, Virginia where a James (James Henry or Henry James) was born in 1713 and died in 1792. {9} He married Peggy GENTRY from a prominent Virginia family and to this union was born our ancestor John. {10}

John was born on 16 Mar 1734 and had brothers James, Nathan and William. There were possibly other children but their names are not known at this time. The death date of the mother, Peggy GENTRY BYARS, is not known but since John was born in 1734 and we know the other brothers were born in the 1730's also, it is a certainty she died after 1734. {11}

James (James Henry or Henry James) BYARS married second, Rachel MATTHEWS. {12}

The James (James Henry or Henry James) BYARS family lived in St. Martin's Parish, Hanover Co., VA and in Louisa Co., VA. In Deed Book C,{13} page 168, dated12 Oct 1762 we find: "James (Byers) Byars{14} of St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County to son, John Byars, Trinity Parish of Louisa County, land for 'Love and affection'", the land lying and being in Louisa County."

John BYARS married Elizabeth THOMASON, daughter of George THOMASON and Mary "Polly" POLLARD THOMASON {15} (see appendix{16} ) on 23 Dec 1754.

They had twelve children:

a) Mary, b. 1 Nov 1755, d. young, m. Oct 1775, David SMITH.

b) Elizabeth "Betsy", b. 9 June 1759,{17} d. 28 April 1766.

c) James, b. 12 Mar 1761, m. 19 Dec 1782 Lovinia SMITH, {18} 5 children, birth order not known:

1) Elizabeth, b. 1839.

2) Sarah Amanda, b. 1847, VA, d. 31 Dec 1856, bu. Old Glade Spring Cemetery, Washington Co., VA.

3) John, II, b. abt. 1811-1890, m. Jane B.,{19} b. 1819, d. 8 May 1897.

4) George, no further information.

5) Arthur, no further information.

d) Sally, b. 12 Jan 1763, m. 14 Jan 1789, William COLE. {20}

e) John, Jr., b. 12 Nov 1764, d. 1 Nov 1819, m. 1794 Agnew BOWE? {21}

f) Martha, b. 17 May 1766, m. 27 May 1788, Nathaniel HARRIS.

g) Fleming, b. 29 Mar 1768.

h) Anna, b. 29 Sep 1769, m. 6 Oct 1789, William SMITH.

i) Jemina, b. 1773, d. 24 Apr 1718, bu. Old Glade Spring Cemetery, Washington Co., VA.

j) Betsy, b. 21 Nov 1774, m. Mr. FOX.

k) William, b. 18 Nov 1776, d. 14 Feb 1856.

l) George, m. 10 Dec 1793, Rebecca SIMS. {22}

John BYARS died in Louisa Co. in 1781 and shortly thereafter his widow, with her son William and a younger sister, moved to Washington Co., VA, and built a long house near the home of Co. DYSART on the creek between Brook Hall and Cave Spring. {23}

Elizabeth THOMASON BYARS died 12 Oct 1823 at the age of 88 years, 7 months and is buried in the Old Glade Spring Cemetery, Washington Co., VA. {24}

BYERS, JACOB C. (deceased) ._ One of the representative citizens and practical agriculturists of Sangamon County, Ill., was the late Jacob C. Byers, who for a number of years carried on operations on Section 30, in Cooper Township. Mr Byers was born at Shepherdstown, W. Va., November 7,1839, a son of Jacob and Catherine (Snyder) Byers. Jacob Byers, who was a native of Germany, came to America as a child, and in West Virginia became a farmer, continuing in that occupation throughout the remainder of his life. Both he and his wife died in West Virginia. Of their nine children two are still living, Mrs. Sarah Hensel and John M. Byers, both residents of Pawnee, Ill.

Jacob C. Byers attended the public schools of West Virginia and the College of Mt. Morris, Ill., to which place he had come as a lad to live with a sister, and after completing his schooling he engaged in farming in Ogle County. On February 15, 1859, Mr. Byers was married to Mary Ann Blecker, a native of West Virginia, who was born November 20, 1833, and after their marriage they located in Ogle County, where Mr. Byers again engaged in farming. Seven children were born to this union: Anna E., the wife of Brayden Carswell of Springfield; Charles B., a farmer living in the Southwest; George E., a farmer of Macoupin County; Elmira C., the wife of Walter Whitecraft of Springfield; Lillie B., connected with the Newman Dry Goods Company, in Springfield; and one who died in infancy. Mrs. Byers died September, 2, 1889, in Christian County, Ill., whence the family had moved in 1880 to locate on a farm near Edinburg. On September 15, 1891. Mr. Byers was married (second) to Nancy M. Burchell. who was born in Burlington, Iowa, March 26, 1847, a daughter of Robert C. and Jane (Morris) Burchell, the former of Alexandria, W. Va., and the latter of New York, their marriage taking place at Jeffersonville, Ind. Mr. Burchell, who was one of the distinguished men of his day, and with whom it is related President Abraham Lincoln visited, was a well known lawyer of Burlington, Iowa, where he practiced with Judge Springer, and later at Mt. Morris, Ill., but later went to Oregon, Ill., where he established and conducted the "Ogle County Reporter," which is still being published under same name. Here he continued to live and practice law until his death, having served as State's Attorney and County Judge and as Mayor of Oregon. As a candidate for State's Attorney, his name was on the same ticket running for State's Attorney as Richard Yates. Mrs. Byers has a brother, Robert, living in Erie, Whiteside County, and a sister, Catherine Jones, the wife of Adolphus Jones, a prominent banker of Iowa. Another sister, Mrs. Virginia Wales, died at Los Angeles. Cal. Mrs. Byers is the owner of a home in Berry, Sangamon County, and has an interest in valuable property in Oregon, Ill. She is a consistent member of the Methodist Church, to which her late husband also belonged. The latter was a Republican in his political views.

JOSEPH SHEPHERD, SR. A goodly number of the old settlers of the county have secured a sufficient amount of worldly goods to ensure them against want in their declining years and enable them to surround themselves with many comforts unknown in their earlier days here, when markets were neither as near nor as adequate as at present. Among those of this number who are worthy of notice is the subject of these paragraphs, whose portrait is presented on the opposite page. He is the owner of a large farm in Woodside Township and has there every needful and convenient arrangement for the furtherance of the work of the estate and the comfort of the family circle. The farm comprises four hundred and eighty acres of land that is under first-class tillage and is made to produce abundantly in due season.

Mr. Shepherd was born in Shepherdstown, W. Va., June 11, 1816, and is the fourth in a family of eight children. His parents were Thomas and Mary (Byers) Shepherd, natives of the same place as himself. The father died there in 1833, and the widowed mother subsequently coming to this county, died in Pawnee Township. The son of whom we write remained in his native place until he was about twenty years of age, learning those lessons from books, observation and home training that fitted him for the battle of life. In the fall of 1836 he came to this county and established himself in Woodside Township, where he has continued to reside, accumulating a competence from year to year.

In this township Mr. Shepherd was joined in holy wedlock to Fanny Smith, an estimable lady, who was born in Franklin County, Pa., and who shared his joys and sorrows until 1866, when she was called from time to eternity. Of her children, eight in number, the following are now living: John T., James H., Joseph, Jr., and Saloma. Saloma is now the wife of George Doane and lives in this township. The present capable wife of Mr. Shepherd was born in the Old Dominion and bore the maiden name of Lydia Byers.
She went to Ohio with her parents, Abraham and Margaret (Bramhall) Byers, natives of Virginia, when she was but eight years old, grew to womanhood there and married Matthias Haggard. That gentleman died, leaving to the widowed mother's care a daughter, Margaret, who makes her home with Mr. Shepherd. The result of the present union of Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd is two living children - William A. and Lydia.

For some thirty years Mr. Shepherd has been serving in the capacity of School Director. He and his wife belong to the Methodist Episcopal Church and he has held the positions of Class-Leader, Steward and Trustee. Both manifest a deep interest in whatever promises to increase the material prosperity of the citizens or add to their moral and intellectual status. They are therefore looked upon with esteem as helpful, honorable members of society
