The original BANDYS were among the French Huguenots who left France in the 1500's because of religious persecution.   The name has changed several times but originally was "Baudoin" or "Bandoin" many Bandy families after leaving France, stopped and settled in England.   It is in Liverpool, England where we find our earliest Bandy. 

RICHARD BANDY my 6th Great grandfather was born about 1720 in Liverpool.   He married JANE CUMMINGS and they left England in 1745 and landed in the Virginian colonies settling in what is now Botetourt County.   I have found no dates for their births, marriage or deaths.   At this time large groups of French Huguenots were coming to the colonies and most settled in Virginia.

Children to Richard and Jane Bandy, were THOMAS, George, Robert, James, Lewis, John, Richard and Solomon.   All of these boys are believed to have stayed in Virginia until after the Revolutionary War.   They then moved on to other states.

THOMAS BANDY my 5th Great Grandfather was born February 22, 1747 in Cumberland, Virginia.   His first wife was Nancy Burns, my Grandmother was his second marriage, the date is unknown and we know only her first name POLLY.

Thomas was a reverend in Franklin County, Virginia and during the Revolutionary War he was a private in a Virginia Regiment.   He was in the battles of Guilford Courthouse and Yorktown.   He died October 18, 1835 in LaGuardo, Wilson County Tennessee.   Nothing is known about Polly.   Children of Thomas and Nancy Bandy were James, Elihu, Elizabeth, Robert, Horatio, Samuel, Jincey, and Nancy.   Children with my Polly Bandy were Phoebe, my 4th Great grandfather CARY, Richard, and Elizabeth.

In the 1800's many Bandys had moved into Smith and Summer Counties of Tennessee, then in 1842 Macon County was formed from both Smith and Summer Counties and the Bandys or at least most of them were found living in Macon County.

CARY BANDY my 4th Great grandfather was born October 30, 1769.   He married FRANCES WOOD on November 14, 1791 in Franklin County, Virginia.   Their children were Cecilia, Mary, Lewis, Martha, Lucretia, Lydia, Rhoda, BLUFORD, John and Margaret.   Cary Bandy died in 1849 in Tennessee.   Nothing is known about Frances.

A visit to Macon County TN. in 2001 told very little about our Thomas Bandy, his son Cary Bandy and his son Bluford Bandy.   However the Bandys were from this area but fire has destroyed the Courthouse 3 times during the 1800s.   All records for this county start after the last fire in 1900.   Most of our information will have to be obtained from early written histories.

The Bandys live in the Barefoot community, located in the north western part of Macon county, is a very old settlement.   In the early years mail arrived by horseback and a Bandy owned the general store.   The village included a log school and families in the area were the Fosters, Hanes, Bandys, Davis, Doss, Simons, Fallis and the Trouts.   The Bandys also lived around Green Valley which was one of the earliest settlements in Macon County.   Green Valley, so called, because of the early spring greening of the land.   The first cabin was in 1800.

Macon County was formed from both Smith and Summer counties, and I found that Bandys had lived in both Summer and Smith counties.

During the war between the states Joseph, Joseph W., John T, Yancey, Biship, John W. were all Bandys from this area in Tennessee that served in the Civil War.   All were privates and in the 9th Kentucky Regiments.

BLUFORD BANDY my 3rd Great grandfather was born in Macon County Tennessee on December 14, 1810.   He married ELIZABETH CORRCY date is unknown.   Children were George, William, LOUIS MADISON BANDY, Sarah, and Lydia.   Elizabeth may have died in child birth, then Bluford married To.   Barbee.   Children were Green, Senia, Cazah, Henry, James, Albert, Wilbert, Mieage, Houston and Edward.

Bluford and his family moved from Tennessee to Illinois during the mid 1850s.   They settled on a farm north of Litchfield, Illinois and adjoining the land of his brother John.   He lived there until his death January 31, 1884.   My sister Connie and I found the cemetery in 1998 about a mile east of Cedar Ridge Cemetery it�s called Roberts cemetery totality overgrown, unkempt, stones overturned and knocked down.

LOUIS MADISON BANDY was born March 17, 1837 in Macon County, Tennessee.   He married my 2nd Great grandmother MARGARET BLUE, February 12, 1857 in Montgomery County, Illinois.   Margaret died during the birth of one of their sons, Louis during his life married five more times.   Children of Louis and Margaret Bandy were George, James, MARY, Morgan, Charles, Bluford, William, Clara and Nora.   Alvin was from his marriage to Martha Sammons.   Louis died of apoplexy, was a long time resident of Montgomery County Illinois.   His funeral was held in the Honey Bend Church, but could not find any record of his being buried in the Honey Bend Cemetery.   For awhile he live in the little white house across the road from the Honey Bend Cemetery. 

The obituary for Louis Madison Bandy is as follows�

Louis Madison Brandy 73 years of age, a retired farmer died at his home in Litchfield, Illinois last Friday April 22, as a result of a stroke of apoplexy.   He is survived by his widow and five sons, George, Morgan, and Charles of Litchfield, James of Bond County, and Bluford of Iowa.   Two daughters Mrs. Dora Gilbreck of Iowa and Mrs. MARY McELFRESH of Waggoner. 

Mr. Bandy was an old resident of the county having lived in North Litchfield townships for more than half a century.   The funeral was held Sunday at the Baptist Church in Honey Bend, Illinois.

MARY ELIZABETH BANDY is my Great grandmother, she was born March 27, 1860 in Montgomery County, Illinois.   On January 2, 1879 she married THOMAS GARRISON McELFRESH. Their children were Birdie McElfresh born Aug. 15, 1879.   He died March 10, 1907.   Dove Alice McElfresh born October 2, 1880.   Madgedelen McElfresh, born Aug. 8, 1882.   Ralph Roy McElfresh born April 13, 1884, he died Oct. 28, 1886.   Mary Grace McElfresh born Aug. 7, 1886.   Charles Walter McElfresh, born May 16, 1888.   My grandmother NELLIE BLY McELFRESH born December 17, 1892.   Opal McElfresh born January 15, 1899.

Mary and Thomas McElfresh lived all their lives in the little town of Waggoner.   Their home was about three blocks east of the railroad track and just a half a block south of Main Street.   Thomas died on May 16, 1926, and Mary Bandy McElfresh died Dec. 5, 1928.   Both are buried in the Honey Bend cemetery.

NELLIE BLY McELFRESH grew up in Waggoner and after she graduated from school got a job as a telephone operator in Farmersville.   One afternoon a friend of hers, working beside her in the telephone office asked if she, instead of catching the train the six or eight miles back to Waggoner, might stay over that evening and they�d go to a dance at the school.   As she and her friend sat on a bench upstairs in the school, watching the boys as they came up the stairs, she asked if Verna knew a particular boy.   Verna laugh and said she sure did �he�s my brother, that�s SANFORD CLOW.�

Sanford was working several jobs and had been since his dad passed away.   One of those jobs, once in awhile, was playing the drums as sister Verna played the piano at some of the dances.   Verna introduced her brother to Nell and the two started dating soon after.

NELL McELFRESH and SANFORD CLOW were married Feb. 17, 1914.   Nell and Sanford Clow moved to Missouri and lived in several places but in 1921 they moved to Lamar, Missouri.

They lived the rest of their lives in Lamar and both are buried in the Lake Cemetery, Lamar.
