XANTHOMATOSIS

1� hyperlipidaemias [with raised serum cholesterol; hereditary]

2� hyperlipidaemia:

diabetes mellitus (types IIb and IV)

obesity (type IV)

hypothyroidism (type IIa)

biliary obstruction, esp. 1� biliary cirrhosis (type IIa)

nephrotic syndrome (type IIa)

paraproteinaemias

pregnancy

chronic renal failure (raised triglycerides)

anorexia nervosa

pancreatitis (type IV)

alcoholism (type IV)

gout (type IV)

drugs:

retinoids

thiazides

steroids

non-selective beta-blockers

norgestrel (in oral contraceptive pill)

 NB:

-xanthoma over eyelids (xanthelasma) typically occur in hyperlipidaemia type IIb;

-eruptive xanthomas [very raised serum triglycerides] occur in:

alcoholism

exogenous steroids

diabetes mellitus;

-tendon xanthomas occur in hyperlipidaemia type IIa [raised cholesterol; normal triglycerides].
