STOMATITIS / CHEILOSIS

viral:

herpes simplex type I [usually recurrent; 'cold sore']

coxsackie A (hand, foot and mouth disease)

herpes zoster involving Vth nerve (unilateral)

EBV [palatal petechiae typical; tonsillitis and pharyngitis usually present]

bacterial:

streptococcal

Vincent's stomatitis [in malnourished with poor dentition]

tuberculosis

syphilis [1� causing chancre; 2� causing snail-track ulcer]

fungal:

candidiasis (esp. in immunosuppressed / antibiotic treatment)

non-infective:

recurrent aphthous ulceration

vitamin deficiencies (niacin, folate, pyridoxine [B6], B12, riboflavin)

iron deficiency

ill-fitting dentures

Crohn's disease

Behcet's disease [+ painful genital ulcers + iritis]

leukaemias and other blood dyscrasia

Reiter's disease
