RECURRENT AND/OR UNRESOLVING CHEST INFECTION

recurrent aspiration:

achalasia

gastro-oesophageal reflux

pharyngeal pouch/diverticulum

tracheo-oesophageal fistula (eg. carcinoma)

neuromuscular disease, eg. bulbar palsy

exacerbations of chronic lung disease:

chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

bronchiectasis, including cystic fibrosis

other underlying lung conditions:

bronchial carcinoma

foreign body (especially in young children and mentally retarded)

Eisenmenger's syndrome / pulmonary hypertension

tuberculosis

right middle lobe syndrome [narrow bronchus]

immunosuppression:

HIV

hypogammaglobulinaemia
