PNEUMOTHORAX

spontaneous:

primary spontaneous pneumothorax (? small congenital bullae)

previous lung disease:

emphysematous bullae

bronchial asthma

bronchial carcinoma

pneumonia, eg. staphylococcal

lung abscess

pulmonary tuberculosis

occupational lung disease

cystic fibrosis

pulmonary infarction

Langerhans cell histiocytosis

trauma:

penetrating injury or rib fracture

iatrogenic, eg. insertion of central line, IPPV, surgery

[NB: practically any lung lesion / disease can predispose to pneumothorax]
