MONONEUROPATHY

pressure palsy (entrapment syndromes):

carpal tunnel syndrome

tarsal tunnel syndrome

'meralgia paraesthetica' (lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh)

others

traumatic palsy (usually neurapraxia):

ulnar nerve at elbow

peroneal nerve at knee

trauma to any other peripheral nerve

compression:

acoustic neuroma

meningioma

compression with infiltration:

lymphoma

leukaemia

carcinoma

infection:

herpes zoster

leprosy

Lyme disease (typically causes facial palsy)

meningeal disease:

tuberculosis

syphilis

vasculopathy (infarction):

diabetes mellitus (commonest affected is 3rd cranial nerve)

polyarteritis nodosa and other vasculitides

other:

sarcoidosis

heavy metal poisoning, eg. lead

idiopathic, eg. Bell's palsy (idiopathic facial nerve mononeuropathy)
