MESANGIOCAPILLARY (MEMBRANOPROLIFERATIVE) GLOMERULONEPHRITIS

1° (idiopathic) MPGN:

type 1 [subendothelial electron-dense deposits]

type 2 ['dense deposit disease'; dense deposit in GBM itself; low serum C3; associated with lipodystrophy and 'C3 nephritic factor']

[type 3 = rare variant with features of types 1 and 2]

2° MPGN (usually type 1):

systemic lupus erythematosus

hepatitis B

hepatitis C with cryoglobulinaemia

infected ventriculo-atrial shunts ('shunt nephritis')

schistosomiasis

alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency

chronic liver disease

certain malignancies
