(HAEMOCHROMATOSIS / HAEMOSIDEROSIS)

1° haemochromatosis [idiopathic; genetic; affects liver, pancreas, endocrine glands, heart]

2° haemochromatosis [haemosiderosis]:

anaemias with ineffective erythropoeisis:

thalassaemia major

sideroblastic anaemias [various]

high iron intake:

prolonged ingestion of iron tablets

multiple blood transfusions (>150 litres)

intake of alcohol with iron in South African blacks
