HYPERNATRAEMIA

free water deficiency:

diabetes insipidus (renal loss of water)

hypotonic fluid loss:

vomiting

diarrhoea

renal losses

excess sweating

salt gain:

steroids

iv hypertonic saline

NB: hypernatraemia is usually corrected in conscious patient due to thirst mechanism; this is impaired or lost in drowsy or unconscious patient, causing hypernatraemia.
