RAISED CSF PROTEINS

meningitis / encephalitis (bacterial, fungal, tuberculous)

intracranial tumour, esp. acoustic neuroma

carcinomatous meningitis

Guillain-Barre syndrome [normal cell counts]

spinal block (Froin's syndrome)

 NB: slightly raised CSF proteins (<2g/l) can also occur in:

3° syphilis

congenital toxoplasmosis

multiple sclerosis (+ oligoclonal bands)

diabetes mellitus

hypothyroidism

following cerebral infarction or subarachnoid haemorrhage

subacute sclerosing panencephalitis

lead encephalopathy
