HAEMOPTYSIS

neoplastic conditions:

bronchial carcinoma

rarely other tumours, eg. adenoma, hamartoma, metastases

infections:

tuberculosis (especially if aspergilloma present)

bronchiectasis, including cystic fibrosis

pneumonia (especially Klebsiella and pneumococcal)

lung abscess

coccidioidomycosis

other:

pulmonary embolism (with infarction)

lung contusion (trauma)

foreign body inhalation

following needle biopsy or R heart catheterisation

pulmonary arteriovenous fistula

haemorrhagic diatheses

bullous emphysema

acute pulmonary oedema (slight haemoptysis)

allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis

idiopathic pulmonary haemosiderosis

pulmonary sequestration

secondary to bleeding from nose, larynx (not true haemoptysis)

pulmonary hypertension:

mitral stenosis

primary pulmonary hypertension

vasculitis:

Wegener's granulomatosis

Goodpasture's syndrome
