ANTERIOR ISCHAEMIC OPTIC NEUROPATHY

vasculitic causes:

giant cell arteritis

non-vasculitic:

hypertension [40%]

diabetes mellitus [22%]

other CVS disease [23%], eg. MI, carotid artery disease

no cause found [25%]

 NB: with involvement of second eye [usually after 5 years in non-vasculitic type], the pseudo-Foster-Kennedy syndrome occurs, i.e. optic atrophy on original side and swollen disc on other side.
