Introduction
Assignment 2
I related easily to Dickinson’s poem as I am an avid gardener and have experienced almost jumping out of my skin when suddenly, “a narrow fellow” (garden snake) slithered into my peaceful sanctuary. Through her words, Dickinson painted a vivid, yet mischievous picture of a snake in my mind’s eye. Almost immediately I could recall my past reaction when surprised by an unexpected movement as I quietly reflected in my garden. I was pleasantly amused at how readily I could visualize my unexpected visitor from the past through Dickinson’s playful words and her use of strategically placed rhyme. I especially enjoyed her last four lines. Though I know that garden snakes are not poisonous, I related to those closing lines by immediately feeling a tension slither through my body.
