Bertha Starke went to school from 1877 until March, 1885 in Nieder Schoenfeld (Niederschönfeld). Click here for a picture of the Niederschönfeld Church. Ober- and Nieder-Schoenfeld, Kreis Bunzlau, home to the Starke and Dehmel families, are described in an e-mail sent on December, 2001 from Dorit S., Leipzig, Germany. It also tells of the Beyer family's relationship to that area. You can see an 1882 map of the area here, and the names of the Polish cities here (Schoenfeld is near Alt Oels).

"Hello David!

The letters from Bertha Starke are very impressive and interesting. I also have ancestors in the villages of Ober- and Nieder-Schoenfeld. My great-great-grandfather Hermann August Beyer was born 1.12.1846 at the family farm in Ober-Schoenfeld, Kreis Bunzlau, and was christened in the Evangelical (Lutheran) Church in Niederschönfeld. He went to Berlin in about 1865. The Beyer family lived in Ober-Schoenfeld at least until 1945. At that time, many of the buildings in the villages were destroyed, and almost all German inhabitants were resettled (usually further west). I don't know if any Germans still live there.

Because the Evangelical Church books from Nieder-Schoenfeld were completely destroyed, I haven't been able to research my family tree any further back; because of that, I unfortunately have no further information.

I would be especially interested in photos from these villages and the surrounding area.

Die Briefe von Bertha Starke sind sehr eindrucksvoll und interessant.

Auch ich habe Vorfahren in den Doerfern Ober- und Nieder-Schoenfeld. Mein Ururgroßvater Hermann August Beyer ist am 1.12.1846 in Ober-Schoenfeld, Kreis Bunzlau auf dem vaeterlichen Bauernhof geboren worden und in Nieder-Schoenfeld in der evangelischen Kirche getauft worden. Er ging ca. 1865 nach Berlin. Die Familie Beyer blieb aber noch bis mindestens 1945 in Ober-Schoenfeld ansaessig. Damals wurden viele Gebaeude des Dorfes zerstoert und fast alle deutsch-staemmigen Bewohner ausgesiedelt. Ob dort heute noch Deutsche wohnen, weiß ich nicht.

Da die evangelischen Kirchenbuecher von Nieder-Schoenfeld wohl vernichtet wurden, konnte ich diesen Familienzweig bisher nicht weiter zurueckverfolgen und habe deshalb leider auch keine weiteren Informationen.

Mich wuerden besonders Fotos von diesen Doerfern und der Umgebung interessieren.

Our family has visited many villages and cities (because my mother is also from Nieder-Schlesien -- Silesia). The condition of the villages varies quite a lot. Some places have been well restored (for example, the inner-city from Bunzlau). In many villages, however, one still sees a lot of poverty. Many of the houses are often poorer than the one in the photo (he sent).

There isn't much beautiful in the outer ring of the cities; mostly they are living blocks with "socialistic charm". This architecture was typical for the Eastern Block from Wladivostoc to Leipzig.

It is about 4 hours from Berlin to Bunzlau by car."

Die Gegend um Bunzlau ist sehr schön, viel Wald im Norden, dann wieder grosse landwirtschaftliche Gebiete. Es ist leicht huegelig, im Sueden ist ja bald das Riesengebirge. Wir haben mehrere Doerfer und Staedte besucht (auch meine Mutter kommt aus Nieder-Schlesien). Der Zustand ist sehr unterschiedlich. Einige Orte wurden gut restauriert (beispielsweise die Innenstadt von Bunzlau). In vielen Dörfern sieht man aber noch viel Armut. Die Haeuser sehen oft noch ärmer aus als auf dem Foto. Am Aussenring der Städte gibt es wenig Schoenes, meistens sind es Wohnblocks mit "sozialistischem Charme". Diese Architektur war typisch für den Osten von Wladivostoc bis Leipzig ... Von Berlin bis Bunzlau ist es nur ca. 4 h mit dem Auto.
