On the other hand, when we lead we show others, and ourselves, why those elements
in that system,
transient though it might be, are crucial for our shared existence. We create
the life that we share with others, and are recreated in turn: we are the artists of our own souls
- no small mission, and certainly great responsibility.
The great joy of Medicine is that we are urgently called to manage the diseases of others
at the same time as we take the risk of leading each other through an ever-changing life.
Disease, ignorance, error in judgment or performance, even just the differences that communicate
who we are define the purposes that bring us together. The tasks created thereby
all serve the same end: to have true sense of another. We manage each other and we lead
each other at the same time.
These vectors - management and leadership - define the moment of every shared encounter.
