ASIA (Bangladesh) To ARGATY (Scotland)

Sponsored Motorbike Run for CRP

This document is also available in Word 6 format.

On behalf of the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed a sponsored motorbike ride has been organised. The riders are husband and wife, Mo and David, both keen motorcyclists. Both were born and raised in Scotland but are now citizens of Australia. Originally this journey was to be a private affair, but when visiting friends working at CRP, Maggie and Steve, they discussed the opportunity of linking their trip with a sponsorship scheme for CRP. The planning and preparation for this excursion has taken them a year. When they were finally ready they had to ship their bikes from Australia to Singapore and then onto Bangladesh. Their route is approximately 20,000 kilometres and it is envisaged to take about five months to complete.

Their route is as follows: From CRP just outside Dhaka they head to north Bangladesh. After a few days in Sylhet they will cross the border with India. Once in India they will stop off in Shillong. From Shillong they drive to Darjeeling (for a nice cup of tea). After staying in Darjeeling for a while they will enter Nepal. Once inside Nepal they will see the capital Katmandu. From Nepal they will cross back into India and down to New Delhi. From New Delhi they go north to Pakistan. After spending some time in Pakistan they will head over the border with Iran. From southern Iran they cross the whole country to northern Iran. From there they jump into Turkey and then down to Syria. From Syria they travel south to Lebanon and Beirut. From the Lebanon they cross into Israel, (have you fallen asleep yet?). From Israel they make a detour into Jordan and then back into Israel.

After Israel they leave the Middle East and catch a ferry across the Mediterranean Sea to Greece. After driving through Greece they get another ferry, (I know you're thinking, "I thought this trip was on land"), to Italy. From the coast of Italy they head towards France. From France they backtrack down to Spain for a siesta, only joking, and then back up into France. From the South of France they go north until they reach the English Channel. Once across the channel and into England it's then north to reach their final destination, wee bonny Scotland, Hurrah!

No, they are not mad. The aim of the trip is to raise money to build a new Mother and Child Unit here at CRP. This Mother and Child Unit will care for children with Cerebral Palsy. It will teach mothers how to use Physiotherapy and other activities to help care for their children. It will also help break down the barriers concerning Cerebral Palsy in Bangladesh. The new centre will help educate and inform parents about the true facts of Cerebral Palsy. The current Mother and Child Unit is over stretched in both resources and space. The places available in the current Mother and Child Unit for children are just not enough for the demand.

This proposed new Mother and Child Unit has been estimated to cost around GBP45,000. We are hoping to raise around half of this target, about GBP20,000, from this trip. Because the route is around 20,000 kilometres that's only 1 pound a Km. Each pound will go directly into covering the costs of building a new Mother and Child Unit. With the support of all our friends around the world, we feel that this target can be reached and maybe passed.

You can help us in any way by either organising separate fundraising projects for CRP e.g. sponsored swim, cycle, run or just asking family and friends for donations, it's up to you. For schools we have designed a separate sponsorship form they may want to use. We thought it would be good for schools to use this trip as a geography/history project. Alternatively you can send money straight to FCRP/TRP from your own pocket. The amount of money you send is irrelevant because together we can overcome this challenge. To sponsor the fund just use the details on the payment sheet below.

You can keep up to date with Mo and David as they travel along their route by logging onto their website: www.geocities.com/davidandmo. It has maps of each of the countries they will visit including a country to country diary and also a lot of facts about their trip. It also has information about CRP, with very good pictures. Alternatively you can find out about the trip and CRP by logging onto our website:www.crp-bangladesh.org. You can download images from both sites.
