Description
Palmtop News Reader (PNR) is an offline news & mail reader for the
HP200LX Palmtop PC.
Latest version: 4.0 (Released 21 Feb 2001)
Rod Whitby (the previous author of PNR) is no longer able to maintain it,
and has allowed me to maintain and (hopefully) improve it. You can find previous versions of PNR and other HPLX
software by Rod on his home page.
The information contained in this document has been extracted from the PNR
documentation. For a more complete reference please consult the PNR
documentation which comes with the software.
PNR is capable of reading:
- MMDF format files created by LXMTA (part of the LXTCP suite)
- Standard UNIX mailbox format files
- Bare format news files (which can be created via rn, tnr,
tin, etc.).
News & mail is imported to PNR via an external program called PNRTI
(Palmtop News Reader Threader & Indexer), which interprets, indexes,
threads, and removes killed articles from the news & mail files.
PNR features:
- Partially MIME compliant (you can send MIME attachments
but need an external decoder to read them).
- Mail and posts can be replied to, with full article
quotation, and signature file support.
- Alias support.
- Basic kill file support.
- Threaded.
- Any message can be filed into a folder for storage or
later use.
- External files (e.g. articles saved by other news readers)
can be imported and stored in a folder.
- Replies can be re-edited before sending them (or even filed).
- Proportional and fixed font support. Three fonts can be
used which can be changed dynamically, allowing zooming.
- Highly configurable.
- The built-in MEMO editor can be used, or any DOS editor.
EXM editors can also be used via telling PNR which scan codes to stuff
into the keyboard buffer.
- And its System Manager compliant!
- And its FREE!
New features in version 4.0:
·
When composing messages or replying, you can attach
binary files, which are automatically MIME encoded.
·
When replying you can attach the original message
as a MIME attachment
New features in version 3.6:
- It's smaller!
- You can use the HPLX's built in phone book to hold email
addresses and "Smart Clip" them into PNR.
- The system manager compliant (.exm) version and the DOS
(.exe) version may use different editors
- While running PNR, PNRTI and LXMTA "lock" each
other out to prevent corrupting the incoming mail box.
- Transfer of messages to saved folders has been improved.
