ANTONIO MARIN MONTERO 1979, no.243 OTHER COMMENTS |

Mr. Al Sulzer, USA - the Marin previous owner
"This guitar has the gBoucheth style bracing that Marin-Montero is famous for.
It also has the sound and response that his guitars are famous for, with sweet
projecting trebles; rich, sonorous basses and a response that makes it seem like the sound is exploding out from the instrument.
It is a true joy to play.
Regarding the sound, the trebles are on the bright side. This could be somewhat
from the strings I use (D'Addario extra hard tension). The guitar
can sound sweet when played right and over the soundhole.
The basses are my favorite part of the guitar. Very rich,
warm and sonorous but not muddy. They are still clear.
They, more than anything, I think, give this guitar a very
characteristic "Spanish" sound.
The guitar responds well to varying touches, so it has a wide
pallette of tones available. Even very light, subtle touches
bring a great response.
Also, keep in mind that the finish was recently redone, especially
the top because of the wear that had existed, so it was kind of like a new guitar again
in regards to opening up. I believe that it will improve
greatly over the next few years.

This guitar had been played hard by a flamenco player. Thus, it required
quite a bit of professional
work done to it about a year ago, by Doug Somervell of North Carolina.
The French polish finish was all professionally repaired,
with the most work being done to the top to repair many scratches into
the bare wood just below the high E string.
The darker marks still show where they had been.
The work that I had done to it really got it in nice
shape again, but it went about two and a half years without
being played, much of that time without being strung, so it
is more like a new guitar in that respect and should respond
well to more continued playing.
I will just say that Mr.Antonio Marin Montero is known as the top guitar maker in Granada and one of
the best in the world. I have also heard that he intends to retire from guitar
making soon (he is now 71 or 72 years old) so his guitars will become
even harder to get and more expensive in the near future.
From an advertisement of an online shop in USA
"A former protege of the great French luthier, Robert Bouchet -
the esteemed and now senior Granada maker, Antonio Marin, handcrafts
a classical guitar which is a unique blend of the Northern European and
Spanish guitar making traditions. Highly sought after worldwide, it is not
surprising that his magnificent instruments have become increasingly difficult
to obtain.
Marin's concert guitars possess a wonderful deep earthy sound: lean without being
thin, bell like without lacking character, and very precise - quick, powerful trebles,
midrange and bass, excellent sustain, balance separation and color."
