Our offense really laid an egg against MSU. Total Offense is ranked #2 in Big Ten and #47 nationally. Rushing Offense is ranked #28 nationally and #1 in Big Ten. Passing Offense is ranked #80th nationally and #10 in the Big Ten. Scoring Offense is ranked #1 in Big Ten and #24 nationally. We have shown a quick strike capability, but we are not a good red zone offense and we can't grind it out with long time consuming drives when we need to. Please note the Big Ten didn't update their statistics on October 4 through 4:45 p.m so the ranks are as of September 27.

Comments: Tate Forcier has an efficiency rating of 142.69 ranking him #39 nationally. He was incredible in the last 4:47 of the MSU game, and gave us a chance to win the game. He has completed 71 of 119 for 9 TDs and 3 interceptions plus 53 rushes for 154 yards and 2 TDs plus a 2 point conversion. Forcier bruised his ribs in the EMU game, and was hurt again in the Indiana game; we can't afford to lose him. Denard Robinson has 32 rushes for 170 yards and 3 TDs plus 4 of 11 for 18 yards in the air with 2 interceptions. Denard "Shoelace" Robinson brings a new dimension to the position, and hopefully we'll see him used more at Slot. Nick Sheridan brings experience and is a capable backup. Nader Furrha walks on from Ann Arbor Pioneer, but separated his shoulder. Devin Gardner and Cornelius Jones have committed for 2010. Jason Forcier is not eligible to return to play at Michigan.

Our defense is one of the worst in the nation and the Big Ten; we are 91st in total defense, 81st in rushing defense and 88th in pass defense. Iowa, Penn State, Ohio State, Wisconsin and other Big Ten opponents plan to run the ball down our throats like Michigan State, Eastern Michigan, Indiana and Notre Dame did. When teams need to throw, they certainly know they can as our defensive backfield is one of the worst in the nation. Teams may possess the ball up to 40 minutes a game due to such poor play, and it give our offense little time to do much. It creates more possessions for our opponents and limits our possessions.

Comments: True Frosh Craig Roh earned the starting position, but only has 14 tackles, 2 for loss including a sack and an interception in 5 games. Brandon Herron is the backup; he has 13 tackles, 0.5 for loss and a fumble recovery. We are not getting a lot of production from this position and scheme thus far. Herron has been rumored as lifting 26 reps with 225 lbs. and a single at 435 lbs., 38.5" vertical jump and a 4.48 40 yard dash. Pretty impressive if true. Jordan Paskorz has committed for 2010.

Lolata, Anthony 90 ILB-MIKE 4 Fr. 6'4" 256 Recruit 4.64 n/a n/a 1310 3.7

Comments: Obi Ezeh leads the defense with 48 tackles, 3 for loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and 2 pass break ups. He really let Cousins off the hook with numerous scrambles that netted 75 yards. Our middle is vulnerable and offensive teams know it. He is backed up by Kenny Demens with 3 tackles each. Marell Evans transfers. Antonio Kinard has pledged for 2010.

Comments: Mouton has 29 tackles, 0.5 for loss plus an interception and a fumble recovery; he was suspended for EMU for throwing a punch in the Notre Dame game. Kevin Leach picked up 10 tackles to lead the defense in his absence; he now has 12 for the season. Brandon Smith is the other backup; he has 4 tackles and is playing on special teams. Can we get pledges from Josh Furman, Anthony Barr or Aramide Olaniyan?

Comments: Floyd is now the starter; he has 12 tackles and got his first pass break up against MSU. Cissoko contributed 13 tackles, two pass break ups and an interception; he was replaced after the 58 yard bomb in the first half against Indiana. Courtney Avery and Terrence Talbott have committed for 2010. Will we get pledges from Cullen Christian, Tony Grimes, Rashad Knight, John Fulton or others? We obviously need cornerbacks; this is a very weak position for us.

Comments: Donovan Warren has 28 tackles, 2 interceptions and 4 pass break ups. J.T. Turner made the trip to MSU, and got his first tackle as a Wolverine. Teric Jones is the other backup, and has seen action on special teams. Both Jones and Turner made the travel team to MSU, and still could redshirt. Adrian Witty is not eligible due to NCAA Clearinghouse requirements; perhaps he'll resign for 2010. Donovan Warren Audio

Comments: Jordan Kovacs has unseated Michael Williams as starter due to several injury issues with Williams, and his outstanding play. Kovacs had 17 tackles, 2 for loss and a forced fumble against MSU to lead the defense. Overall, he has 31 tackles, 4 for loss and a forced fumble to lead the defensive backfield. Michael Williams has 16 tackles, 0.5 for loss. Emilien looks to redshirt.

Comments: Troy Wolfolk has 28 tackles, but was burned for a 73 yard TD strike in the opener. He has no pass break ups, and one wonders when he'll make some plays back there. We are extremely weak at this position. Walk-on Jared Van Slyke is his backup, and he got his first tackle against MSU. It looks like Thomas Gordon will redshirt. Can we get pledges from Bobby Swigert or Sean Parker?

Comments: Mesko has 25 punts for 44.0 yard average, 1 touchback, 10 fair catches and 8 inside the 20; he earned Playboy All-American honors, and is ranked #12 nationally. Our net punting is ranked #5 nationally and #1 in the Big Ten. Wright is also the backup punter to Mesko. Forcier punted once for 50 yards.

Comments: Greg Mathews returned 5 punts for 19 yards in 5 games; as a result, I have re-named the position Punt Catcher rather than Punt Returner. We only want a sure catch, no return. Our punt returns are ranked #107 nationally and #6 in the Big Ten. I guess I really don't comprehend nor agree with the coaching philosophy here of taking an offensive special teams position, and re-framing it as a defensive posture to catch, not fumble and only return if there is nobody withing 10 yards of you. To me, there must be risk-taking at this position; otherwise, we re-frame it in a cowardly fashion. Are we now cowards at Michigan?

ESPN's Spring Wrap for the Big Ten

Revised Comments on schedule and season (October 4):

Well, we are now 4-1. Iowa City is a tough place to play; Iowa has a good team returning and is ranked in the pre-season top 25. We will have to play mistake free football and give our best effort to win. They just beat Penn State in Happy Valley! I don't think we win in Iowa City. Penn State will also be a tough game at home, and Illinois on the road; however, if we play our best, we may be able to come away with two key Big Ten wins. That probably isn't likely. We could split, lose both or win both; it depends on how much we improve and if we can play over our injuries. If Northern Illinois can beat Purdue, we should also be up to the task; however, Purdue is an explosive team and the game won't be a cake walk. Wisconsin is a tough place to play, and if Michigan State couldn't win there, we will have trouble as well. The Ohio State game is alway unpredictable even when one team is heavily favored or superior in talent, but this game at home plus the incentive of a possible bowl qualifier may boost our chances for an upset and an end to the streak of 6 wins in a row. Ohio State's smothering defense is always a huge factor in this one.

Our success this season will be to significantly reduce turnovers, and have a plus turnover margin. Our defensive depth is our biggest team problem over a 12 game schedule with one true Frosh starter (Roh), and four walk-ons backing up: Leach, Kovacs, Heinager and Van Slyke. We have to be the type of team that is capable of stopping solid rushing attacks especially in the Big Ten, and it doesn't really matter whether the team is a spread or pro style offense; we must be capable of stopping the run. We have not shown in the Michigan State, Notre Dame and Eastern Michigan games that we'll be capable of stopping solid running attacks.

Our offense is improved, and barring turnovers, we can move against anyone. We have found a solid quarterback in Forcier, and the addition of Denard Robinson gives us a real dangerous attack that is hard to defend. Brandon Minor is one tough dude, and as good a running back as there is nationally. Carlos Brown is solid, and we have three more capable runners in Shaw, Smith and Cox. Hemingway has shown he can be out "go to" guy, and Koger is also capable along with Mathews and Odoms. Our other receivers: Stonum, Savoy, Grady, etc. must continue to improve so our passing attack will balance out our running threat.

Our special teams should be solid in punt coverage with Senior Mesko, and Bryan Wright is a solid kickoff specialist. Stonum gives us some punch on kickoffs, but Mathews is only a punt catcher and no threat on returns. Olesnavage has been dependable so far.

Ohio State and Penn State are still the teams to beat, but we are capable of upsetting one of them at home.

Winnable games: Delaware State, Purdue at home; Illinois on the road

Tough games to Win: Iowa and Wisconsin on the road; Penn State at home

Rivalry games (anything may happen, but all signs point to a loss): Ohio State at home

6-6 or 7-5 Looks to be our our probably outcome which at least puts us in a bowl game (maybe the EagleBank Bowl with Navy or Little Caesar's Bowl with Central Michigan)
