| Only one defeat helped the Black Stars qualify ahead of a group featuring South Africa and Burkina Faso. After thrashing Somalia 7-0 over two matches, a loss to Burkina Faso was the one low point of the campaign as they would go on to pick up points in every match that followed, including all six against South Africa. An almost flawless campaign proved good enough to see them to their first ever world cup finals. Asamoah Gyan and Stephen Appiah each scored four goals for Ghana while new Chelsea recruit, Michael Essien, got on the scoresheet three times. |
