A PRESSURE PUTT

Another True Golf Story

When I lived in Odessa, Texas in 1960, I was playing in a four-day golf tournament 60 miles away in Big Spring, Texas. No doubt you all have heard of those big cities!

Our time to tee off was at dawn so I had to leave Odessa at about 4am each morning. My eleven year old daughter decided that I needed her to caddy for me so off we went each morning.

On the final hole of a match my opponent had a putt of not more than twelve inches to win. I told him to go ahead and putt out. (Nope, I didn't concede the putt!). I walked over to my daughter who had tears running down her cheeks and apologized for losing. My opponent tapped his putt, but the ball didn't go in the hole! Neither one of use could believe that.

Now you talk about pressure, I now had to make about a ten foot putt just to get even with my opponent and go to extra holes. I looked over at my daughter and she had her fingers crossed and her eyes closed looking up in the sky. I reckon she must have been having a conversation with God because I sank that putt!

The adrenaline really hit me good then and on the first extra hole, a short par four, I got on the green with my tee shot. Didn't make an eagle, but did get a birdie that was good enough to win the match!

That was the good newsthe bad news was I lost my match the next day! As the ole Scot once said, "If yer don't play golf yer missed half your life!" Fore! I'm a coming through.
