"DOGS I HAVE KNOWNED" (continued)
The next dog we got was a pure dee AKC Miniature Poodle about six weeks old and black as the Ace of Spades. Since she was of such royal lineage we had to come up with a real high falutin name for her. Her name was real long, but we just nick-named her Bon- Bon.!
Bon-Bon was a Christmas present for the kids and I put her plum under the Christmas tree and called to the kids, Lookee here what ole Santie Claws done brought! When the kids came into the room I rolled a golf ball (wouldnt you know!) across the floor and she tore out after that ball like she knowed what she was doing.!
Bon-Bon lived for 17 years (119 dog years?) and when she died of a heart attack it was a purely sad day in our household. My youngest daughter made sure that Bon-Bon had a right proper service with casket and interment in a pet cemetery.!
One day many years later my grandson was over mowing our yard and somehow he attracted and brought into the house a great big beautiful Labrador Retriever. That ole Lab took to us like a duck to water. In fact he just loved our swimming pool. However, he was wearing a collar with the owners phone number on it and we didnt get to play with him but about a couple of hours.!
My wife made an unfortunate comment when she said, Oh, lets get us a dog because I then said, Lets get a Dalmation. Well, we got a Dalmation (BAD IDEA) puppy girl which after a great deal of thought, I named her Spot. When we took her to the vet to get her checked out he said, Well, you have a real LIVE WIRE here. I found out later on just what he meant by Live Wire. Ole Spot growed up to be a real smart dog because I was training her to sit, heel and all that stuff. But I never could teach her to BE STILL. She also liked to dig bomb craters in the back yard. But the crowning blow was when she insisted on promptly eating flowers as soon as they bloomed. Well, one day Spot ate one too many of them blooming flowers and she wound up with another (young) couple who already had a Dalmation and wanted another.!
About three months after my wife died, my daughter forced me into getting another dog. On the second trip to a pet shelter we saw Rosie sitting there like a little Princess being real quiet when all the other pore dogs were yapping. So now I have had Rosie for five years. I think about a month or two ago she decided to keep me!!
After Rosie had been with me for a couple of years I decided she might like to have some company instead of being home alone whilst I was playing golf. So Rosie and I went out and found Jake, a Golden Retriever puppy. Rosie approved of Jake and now they are great buddies. Folks, if you ever want a loving friend get you one of them Golden Retrievers!
