Father: David Sheridan, Earth Alliance Diplomat
Descended from General Philip John Sheridan of the Union Army.
Commander of Babylon 5 2259 - 2262
Formerly commander EAS Agamemnon

[played by Bruce Boxleitner]

The only son of Earth Alliance diplomat David Sheridan, he was appointed as the Commander of Babylon 5 on January 8th 2259 by President Clark as a replacement for Jeffrey Sinclair. His first actions on B5 were to appoint Invanova to full commander and to assign her to diplomatic roles, as well as her command duties.

Sheridan had a reputation as a tactical thinker, good at overcoming adverse odds against superior forces - something we see at work during the Shadow war and events leading up to it. Sheridan's record showed that he was a patriot who would fight to protect Earth from both internal and external threats. Because of this he was enlisted by General Hague to help uncover the truth behind President Santiago's death and with the growing realisation that President Clark was leading Earth down a very dark path, he began to form his own "conspiracy of light", enlisting Ivanova, Garibaldi and Franklin.

He also began receiving lessons from Kosh who had entered his mind in a dream after being taken prisoner by the Streib. This growing closeness with Kosh, also led him to grow closer to Ambassador Delenn. In a brief but moving scene [Confessions and Lamenations season 2] we see the beginning of their love story - something that adds great depth to the overall B5 story line.

With the pressures of the on-going Narn/Centauri war and preparing for the coming Shadow war, Sheridan and Delenn come to trust and rely upon each other, so that the relationship begins to move beyond mere friendship. After Draal places the resources of the Great Machine at his disposal, Delenn reveals the existance of the Rangers to him, and gives him joint authority over those Rangers operating in the Babylon 5 area.

Sheridan becomes increasingly sympathetic towards the Narn in the Narn/Centauri War - which almost costs him his command as well as his life. With the start of 2260 he decides it is time to take the offensive when approached by Marcus Cole seeking help to save a Ranger training base. It is at this point he is introduced to and given command of a White Star, which he uses to score his first victory against the Shadows.

Reeling from the attempted takeover of Babylon 5 by Nightwatch and the news of the death of General Hague, he extends assistance to the Alexander and the Churchill, two of the ships that refused to join forces with President Clark. At the same time Babylon 5 seceeds from the Earth Alliance. President Clark despatches a strike force to seize Babylon 5 which almost succeeded but the day was saved by the arrival of Delenn and three Minbari Warcruisers. He then sets about the task of making Babylon 5 self sufficient, while at the same time he begins to create a force to fight the Shadows.

Having created an alliance, he calls upon it to launch a preemptive against the Shadows in Sector 83 where they had been corralling refugees from many worlds in preparation for a devestating attack. They manage to drive the Shadows from the area, but not without heavy losses The Shadows make an immediate response, by sending Anna Sheridan from Z'Ha'Dum -thought by Sheridan to be dead- to convince her husband to return with her to learn the truth about the Shadows and their motives.

Commander Susan Ivanova   (Suzotchka)
Species: Human
D.O.B: Aug 30th 2230
Born: St. Petersburg, Russian Consortium
Earth Force Serial Number: Z48M27 Epsilon
Known Password (B5 Computer Systems): Griffin

Parents: Andrei and Sofie
Brother: Ganya (killed Earth/Minbari war)
Second in command of Babylon 5  2259-2262

[played by Claudia Christian]
One fantastic girl with attitude. A unorthodox Jew with an eidetic memory, born in St. Petersburg but largely educated abroad lest Psi Corps discover that she is a latent telepath. Psi Corps are hated by the family because of their treatment of her mother. She is not a very strong telepath, her own assessment being sub-P1.

After the suicide of her mother and the death of her brother Ganya in the Earth/Minbari war, she joined Earth Force in 2247 - against her father's wishes. She maintained an exemplary record, working her way up through the ranks purely on merit, and without any connections or a patron.

Her chance came in 2258, when as a Lt. Commander, she was appointed to replace Laurel Takashima as second in command of Babylon 5 under Commander Sinclair. She was promoted to full Commander early in 2259 by Captain Sheridan.

Malcolm Biggs (an old flame) re-entered her life shortly after her arrival on Babylon 5, with an offer to rekindle their romance which she was prepared to accept. However when it was revealed that he was a member of the Homeguard, which was planning to assassinate the four major ambassadors on B5, she quickly turned to Sinclair to help bring him to justice.

Suffering from the emotional hurt of this, she began to enter into a relationship with Talia Winters, the station's resident Psi Corps representitive. The relationship didn't get very far when it was revealed that Talia was a sleeper spy for Bureau 13, and that Talia was using her to gather information on the command staff. So once again she was hurt.

This explains her reluctance to accept Marcus Cole into her life as it became increasingly obvious that he had grown to love her. In a sense Susan Ivanova is a lonely character just waiting to be hurt. In the leadup to the final battle to liberate Earth from President Clark, she is mortally wounded, but Marcus Cole makes the ultimate sacrifice to save her life, by giving up his own.

Promoted to the rank of Captain by Sheridan as his last official act as a member of Earth Force, she decided that she needed time to come to terms with events and left Babylon 5 to take a new Warlock class destroyer on a one year shakedown cruise. We see her briefly in the last episode some twenty years later as General Ivanova. She appears to have never married, but makes one final change in her life as Delenn appoints her to the position of Entil'Zha (Ranger One).

Security Chief Michael Garibaldi

Species: Human Born: 2221
Earth Force Serial Number: B17L98
Known Computer Password: peekaboo
Computer Access Code: 0171359
Father: Alfredo Garibaldi

[played by Jerry Doyle]

One of Babylon 5's more colorful characters, a brlliant security chief, loyal and persistant but with a very suspicious nature. He has a troubled past with an alcoholic background - which rises up to hit him in season one (briefly) and again in season five - this time much more seriously. Adding to the problem is the way in which Psi Corps in the form of Bester has played around with his mind (season four).

Garibaldi is always ready with a joke, but he is basically an introspective character, self doubting when alone. Despite this he builds some very strong friendships with the command team, and with the ambassadors as well. G'Kar risks both freedom and life to find him during the Shadow War.

He also builds a working relationship and even friendship with Lyta Alexander. His favorite cartoon character is Daffy Duck.

At the end of the story he finally finds happiness with his old flame Lise.

Dr. Stephen Franklin
Medical Officer/Medical Chief of Staff
Species: Human Age: 36
Father: General Richard Franklin

[Played by Richard Biggs]
A Foundationist by religion, the medical chief of staff and resident xenobiologist on Babylon 5.
He replaced Dr Benjamin Kyle after he had been recalled to Earth.

He had a difficult relationship with his father, mainly because he chose to become a doctor rather than follow the family tradition of becoming a career military officer. He was educated at Harvard where he studied under Doctors Everett Jacobs and Vance Hendricks. He hitchhiked around the galaxy on starships, trading his services as a doctor for passage, visiting many worlds, including the Markab homeworld [Confessions and Lamentations - Season 2] where he befriended Dr. Lazarenn, much to the disgust of his father who considered the trip to be running away from his responsibilities. During the Earth/Minbari war Dr. Franklin destroyed his notes on the Minbari rather than turn them over to Earth Gov to be used in the development of a bioweapon.

A strong believer in the Hippocratic Oath, he was never afraid to place himself at risk to save others. In an attempt to save the life of Shon [The Belivers - season 1] he came close to landing himself in very serious trouble, which could have ended his medical career.

Franklin set up a free clinic in Downbelow to help the Lurkers, but also to act as a cover for his railroad to assist unregistered telepaths escape Psi Corps [A Race Through Dark Places - season 2].

During 2259 and 2260 with the increasing workload caused by the Narn/Centauri War, he developed an increasing addiction to stims. When eventually forced to face the problem by Garibaldi, he resigned his position as chief of medical staff and in accordance with his Foundationist beliefs embarked upon a "walkabout" to overcome his addiction and to find himself. His adventures in Downbelow nearly led to his death as he was stabbed while trying to help break up a fight. But it was here that he finally understood his true nature [Walkabout - season 3] and was eventually to return to his job.

Perhaps Franklin's character can be summed up in just one word - compassion.

Commander Jeffrey David Sinclair
Aka:
Valen
Species: Human. Later Human/Minbari
Born: May 3rd 2218

[played by Michael O'Hare]

Born on Mars Colony at 09:15 Earth Standard Time on May 3rd 2218, and spent three years training as a Jesuit at a school run by Father Rafelli and his wife, the former commenting that Sinclair "possessed gravitas", only to have his speedboat reassembled atop the spire as a prank by his student a short time later.

He then spent a few years working as a laborer before joining Earth Force in 2237as a pilot, upholding a family tradition that could be traced back to the Battle of Britain, in the process learning extensively from his father, who had flown in the Dilgar War, never forgetting what he saw as Balus was retaken.

While at the Academy he began a long standing, albeit on-off relationship with Catherine Sakai. He was to find another love of his life at the Academy; the works of the poet Tennyson, especially that of "Ulysses".

His position as an Earth Force pilot was made official in 2240, and he was made squad leader just a year later, seemingly on a fast track to becoming an Admiral. His career prospects came to a sudden end during the Earth-Minbari War when Sinclair flew with the 361st Tactical Fighter Squadron, leading them into the Battle of the Line where he was only survivor of his squadron of Starfurys, the others being destroyed in less than a minute.

During the battle, having managed to destroy a Minbari fighter, and with his ship crippled he tried to ram a Minbari Warcruiser but blacked out. When he awoke in his fighter twenty four hours later, with only four hours worth of oxygen consumed, the war was over. With a day of his life unaccountable Sinclair suffered a loss of trust amongst his superiors and was shifted from place to place haunted by his missing day.

In 2254 he was assigned to Mars Colony to help with the food riots, during which time he worked with Laurel Takashima, who he managed to put back onto the straight and narrow after she had fallen foul of the corruption that was rife on the colony. The following year, when assigned to investigate possible covert human-alien activity on Mars Colony, he deduced that the failure of previous missions was due to a leak and hired a private shuttle pilot, Michael Garibaldi, to fly him on aerial reconnaissance.

When the shuttle crashed on the fifth day following a systems malfunction, the pair set off on a fifty mile hike out of the desert to get help, during which they observed the excavation of one Shadow Warship by another. This was also witnessed by Dr. Mary Kirkish.

Following his two years on Mars Colony Jeffrey Sinclair was appointed as the first commander of Babylon 5 at the behest of the Minbari, much to his surprise knowing that it was a prestigious command. He requested that his two trusted colleagues from Mars Colony, Laurel Takashima and Michael Garibaldi, join him as executive and security officers respectively.

He was to become very proud of Babylon 5, believing strongly in its role as a peace keeper, and was similarly proud of his command staff, describing Susan Ivanova as the finest officer he had ever served with. Despite this they had to continually bend and rewrite the rule book, although that was perhaps due more to the unique nature of the Babylon Project than anything else.

Shortly after his appointment to Babylon 5, in 2257, he became the prime suspect in an attempted assassination of the Vorlon Ambassador to the station, Kosh, but managed to successfully apprehend the genuine culprit in a shoot out with the help of Michael Garibaldi. This kind of "hands on" action was typical. Sinclair was continually placing himself in the line of fire far too often, personally infiltrating a Homeguard cell for example, until he was warned of his obsessive hero syndrome by Michael Garibaldi.

When not using direct action, another trait of Sinclair's was to find unconventional solutions to problems, using the power granted him by the Rush Act to provide a peaceful settlement by reallocating credits from Babylon 5's military budget instead of using force as was normally required.

This was a decision that gained him several enemies within EarthGov, who later sent Colonel Ari Ben Zayn, an Internal Affairs investigator, to evaluate the station's command staff and their loyalty to the Earth Alliance.

Over the next year Jeffrey Sinclair was to discover more and more about the "hole in his mind" that had been revealed to him by the Minbari who had attempted to assassinate Ambassador Kosh, in particular when some memories of the missing twenty four hours from the Battle of the Line were recalled in his interrogation at the hands of Knight One and Knight Two, revealing that he had been captured by the Minbari, then tortured and scanned by the Grey Council.

Besides his past he was also to receive some disturbing visions of the future, being shown a vision of the possible destruction of Babylon 5 by the Centauri seer, Lady Ladira and later a flash forward while on Babylon 4 where he saw himself and Michael Garibaldi involved in a desperate rear guard fight as Babylon 5 was overrun by an unknown and unseen enemy.

He was also to rekindle his relationship with Catherine Sakai, finally proposing marriage to her at the end of 2258, although with the assassination of President Luis Santiago he thought that the universe was at a crossroads and nothing was the same any more.

A few days later, on 3rd January 2259, he was to be proved correct, when he was recalled to Earthdome. Instead of returning to Babylon 5 he was replaced by Captain John Sheridan and reassigned to be the first ever Earth Alliance Ambassador to the Minbari Federation on the planet Minbar.

While there, he became Entil'Zha (Ranger One) and with the assistance of Rathenn and others, over the next year and a half he built the Rangers into an organization that was to play a critical part in the struggle against the Shadows, and establishing a reputation amongst them for giving cryptic answers.

His life then took an even more dramatic turn when a letter from Valen over nine hundred years old and addressed to "Jeffrey David Sinclair" was presented to him by Rathenn, although he refused to discuss the letter with Rathenn he departed for Babylon 5 immediately, joining forces with Delenn and John Sheridan aboard the White Star to steal Babylon 4 for use in the previous Shadow War 1000 years in the past.

Jeffrey Sinclair was to become the "closed circle", journeying back in time with Babylon 4 accompanied by Zathras, en route using the chrysalis device that had been brought from Epsilon 3 by Zathras to change himself into a Minbari form, knowing that the Minbari would never accept the station if he appeared as a human.

Upon arriving one thousand years in the past, and flanked by two Vorlons, the "Minbari not born of Minbari" that had once been Jeffrey Sinclair introduced himself to the curious Minbari that had boarded Babylon 4 as Valen, and told them that they had "much work ahead of us". Over the course of the next few decades he was to lead the Minbari in driving the Shadows from Z'ha'dum, establish the Grey Council and produce the "prophecies" that would lead to his future self taking the same course of action.

Jeffrey Sinclair's final fate as Valen is a matter of some conjecture for the Minbari religious caste who are undecided as to what eventually became of him, although two notes from the past hinted strongly that he may have been re-united with Catherine Sakai.

Captain Elizabeth Lochley
Species: Human
Age: unknown
Rank: Captain Earth Force
Computer Password: "Zoe's dead"

[played by Tracy Scoggins]
A daughter of a marine who spent part of her youth living in a squalid hotel, cold hungry and using drugs with her close friend Zoe who later killed herself in a deliberate drug overdose. Lochley was later collected by her father and half a dozen off duty marines after a call home. She was badly traumatized by the event, and gave up drugs on the spot to become a career military officer who was later to adopt the pheonix as a symbol for her flight helmet, perhaps as a symbol of her rebirth following Zoe's death.

She was married to John Sheridan shortly after they left the Earth Force academy, although they were divorced three months later when they realized that the relationship was doomed as they both wanted to be in charge all of the time, a situation that had resulted in numerous arguments.

Lochley went on to work at an Earth Alliance mining colony where a rogue telepath ran rings around her staff, killing two of them when they discovered that he was using his skills to cheat at the colony casinos, until he was captured by the Psi Corps in the form of Alfred Bester, who saved two further lives in the process.

During the civil war in the Earth Alliance, Lochley followed her belief in the chain of command and her strong beliefs in the principles of loyalty, duty, and honor, which she saw as justification of her decision to follow orders and not fight against President Clark until she was given an illegal or immoral order, as turning against the chain of command would mean sacrificing one of her three principles and rendering the other two meaningless.

She was personally chosen by John Sheridan as his successor to run Babylon 5 after he assumed the role of President of the Interstellar Alliance as he considered her to be a good diplomat who was not afraid to speak her mind and was not afraid to use force when required, but to use other means if possible. In addition, as she had not fought on his side during the recent civil war she could help reunite the two sides, yet as his former wife he could trust her not to betray him.

Lochley refused to be micro managed by Sheridan in the running of the station, but agreed to the compromise that she would have full authority for the day to day operation of Babylon 5 while he assumed responsibility for political decisions.

Lochley considered herself fortunate to have only met two men as strong willed, stubborn and annoying as she is, the first she married and the second was Michael Garibaldi with whom she had numerous arguments as his naturally suspicious nature tried to discover what skeletons she had hidden and why John Sheridan had picked her for the role of Babylon 5's commander.

Elizabeth Lochley believes that it is unneccessary to solve a problem outright at the first attempt, instead it can often be easier to solve the immediate problem, then solve the next problem and so on until the goal is achieved. This methodology was put into good effect with the arrival of Bester on Babylon 5 when she used the Earth Alliance's quarantine laws to grant Byron and his colleagues a sixty day grace period before they would have to be turned over to Psi Cops as rogue telepaths, a period in which they could look for a more lasting solution.

Lieutenant Commander Laurel Takashima
Species: Human
Age: unknown
Position: Vice-Commander Babylon 5

[played by Tamlyn Tomita]

A lieutenant commander in Earth Force who had been assigned to work Mars Colony security directly after graduating from the academy, where she refused to bow to the corruption that was rife there and as a result languished without promotion for five years which caused her to cease caring and start breaking rules, placing people in danger.

She then served under Jeffrey Sinclair during his assignment to Mars Colony during the food riots of 2254 who finally got her promoted and back within the rules, eventually resulting in her position as the initial Vice-Commander of Babylon 5.

Following her involvement in convincing Lyta Alexander to illegally scan the poisoned Vorlon Ambassador, Kosh, she was transferred off Babylon 5 and replaced by Susan Ivanova early in 2258. Her new assignment was to be on a classified mission to the rim.

Dr. Benjamin Kyle
Species: Human
Age: unknown
Xenobiologist and Chief Medical Officer

[played by Johnny Sekka]
A xenobiologist briefly assigned to Babylon 5 in 2257, but quickly reassigned to Earth as an expert on alien physiology by the Earth Alliance President, Luis Santiago, meeting his successor, Dr. Stephen Franklin en route at Io. Rumors have it that the transfer was because of his contact with the Vorlon Ambassador, Kosh, firstly opening the suit at the request of a desperate Commander Jeffrey Sinclair and then together convincing Lyta Alexander to perform an unauthorized telepathic scan to determine the poison.

He kept his oath of confidentiality, only ever revealing that Kosh was a very unusual alien.
