Dear editor,
I would like to respond to the column by David Roberts which criticized the behavior of Bill Clinton, unfairly comparing his situation to that of Jimmy Swaggart. I would like to point out that, unlike Swaggart, Clinton has never claimed to be a paragon of Christian values and virtues. Mr. Clinton is merely the president of the United States, and in that designation he has been reasonably successful. I would also like to point out that while Swaggart made a dramatic confession of his sins publicly, Clinton's confessionary status is not public, nor should it be. His relationship to God is his business, and as afar was we know he may have confessed his sins to God long ago. The public is not his spiritual judge — God is.
Finally, I cannot believe that Mr. Roberts would imply that Bill Clinton is "immoral," while saying that Swaggart, who is guilty of the same "crime," is simply a "moral upstanding person [who fell] to the temptations of lust."
