Letters to the editor

All-male institutions thing of past

Dear Editor:

Columnist David Roberts said, "Let women go to military institutions that accommodate them, but leave the all-male institutions alone."

The fundamental error in his proposal is that if no woman had ever tried to join an all-male institution, then probably there never would have been a military institution in the United States that welcomed women.

Elsewhere in his article he questions women's motivation in attempting to enroll in the Citadel or the VMI. He suggests that "hoping to make a name for (oneself)" is a bad thing. I feel that in doing so, he condemns most of his gender and certainly most of the cadets at those two institutions, which are famous for producing future politicians or, to use the more noble word, "statesmen."

My understanding of history is that this country was founded by people who made waves.
