Letters to the editor

Roberts right

Dear Editor,

I would like to congratulate David Roberts on his article about evolution. I'm so glad we have a writer for our school newspaper who is willing to stand up for the truth. Not only did he use illustrations that were easy to understand, but he also cleared up an issue that has gone misunderstood for countless years.

Plus he wasn't rude by stating in a "holier than thou" tone of voice, "This is what I believe, and you have to believe it too." He backed up his argument with sensible explanations to help people understand WHY he believes what he believes.

David, every reasonable, open-minded person will listen to what you had to say and think seriously about it, because it really makes a lot of sense.

Roberts wrong

Dear Editor,

David Roberts' column on Wednesday contained numerous inaccuracies about evolution and morality.

No Mr. Roberts, humans did not evolve from monkeys. Instead, humans and monkeys both share a common ancestor.

What was even more upsetting was the statement that without God, "we can live in any vile way we choose without having to answer for our actions."

Has it ever occurred to him that morality can be based on human reason, compassion and upon the consequences of our actions in this world?

As far as accountability goes, we have enforced laws to protect ourselves from those who would bring harm to our society and planet.

According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, non-theists make up about the same percentage of the U.S. population as they do of the U.S. prison population. To imply that unbelievers cannot have the morals is insulting and absurd. And no Mr. Roberts, not everyone is convinced that "God is real and knows everything about us." Just look at worldwide statistics dealing with religious belief.

Perhaps a little more research would do Mr. Roberts some good before he writes his next column.
