We were all a part of history

David Roberts
The events of yesterday were simply phenomenal.
While I am predicting that George W. Bush would win, I never would have suspected the slight margin of votes that it would come down to. The close showing in the polls was quite surprising, I always believed that Bush would win by a blowout. In the end, it will all boil down to one state — Florida. Furthermore, Bush’s predicted margin victory in the Sunshine State is less than 1 percent!

This sends a stunning message to the government. While many Americans are ready for a new look in the White House — a look of integrity and honor — there are still many Americans who think that Al Gore is the best man to lead the nation ahead. I must truly applaud Gore and the Democratic camp for making this such a tight race.

I can’t help but sit in bewilderment as I behold history for the first time. With my own eyes, I think I may finally see the Republicans take control of both executive and legislative branches of the government. This would be something that has not happened since the days of Eisenhower. Quite frankly, I’m excited about the future and it’s uncertainty. For many years, the Democratic Party has been preying on the fears of people, scaring them into believing that Republicans were cruel, mean and desirous of their destruction. Nothing could be further from the truth. If Bush wins, the next two years will demonstrate to the American people that the ideologies of the Republican Party actually do promote prosperity and success — not just for the wealthiest 1 percent, but for all citizens.

Assuming that Bush has won, I will not “rub it in” to all those who voted for Al Gore. Truly, he was a noble man to have received almost half of the confidence of those who voted. Nevertheless, I encourage all citizens to rally behind George W. Bush — he may lead this nation into the 21st century.

He has demonstrated that he can be bipartisan and reach to both sides of the aisle. This is precisely the kind of president we need considering this extraordinarily close race. I know he can do a wonderful job in continuing the prosperity of this great nation. I know that he can restore honor and dignity to the White House. I know that he can return this nation to its place of global respect. Let’s support him as he may begin his mission as the new commander-in-chief. I know I will.
