Republicans want a smaller government of the people

David Roberts
There are many reasons to vote Republican. While I don’t presume to speak for all Republicans, I will give insight into why I personally vote this way.

There are two major reasons why I’m heavily inclined to vote Republican. First, I strongly value innocent human life and second, I believe that it is not the government, but the people, who make this nation great, and therefore each individual has the responsibility to continue our prosperity. Of course, there are other reasons. But, I will first address these important issues.

Considering that I value human life, it should come as no shock that I am staunchly pro-life. Abortion should be extremely rare if ever occurring at all. A baby’s life should not be sacrificed simply because it is an “inconvenience” to the mother. That is just not right because it teaches people that life is expendable.
Clearly, the Republican Party’s pro-life stance is a big plus to me.

I now wish to touch on the “American dream.” As stated earlier, it is the people, not the government, who have made this nation the success it is. Whereas the Democratic Party wishes to “beef” up the federal government with boatloads of programs, the Republican Party is all about giving power back to the people and the states. Life is what we as individuals make it.

We shouldn’t have to rely on the federal government to supply our needs or give us fulfillment. Where I come from, that mentality is called Communism. We all have a responsibility to make something of our lives, and if we doesn’t achieve those goals, then we only have ourselves to blame. Too many people look at the federal government as some sort of gigantic Santa Claus, but this is not its purpose.

I also favor the lower-tax platform of the Republican Party. The hard-working American citizen should not have to fork over large chunks of his or her paycheck to stuff Uncle Sam’s fat wallet. As it is right now, the average American works almost five months of the year solely to pay the federal government. This is simply not right. There should be taxes, but they should not be excessive or burden the working American family like they do now.

I, along with the Republican Party, also favor a strong military. It is the fool who believes that, because the Cold War is over, there is no more danger in the world and therefore, we can drastically downsize the military.
Having a strong military is precisely what ensures our dominance and security. The minute we start to downsize it is the same minute our nemeses may try to overcome us. And let’s not forget that we still have powerful enemies such as Red China. We should not fall into the erroneous thought that peace is upon us.
There will always be some rogue out there willing to make trouble. A strong military ensures our place of prominence in the world.

Similarly, I also believe in the Second Amendment. Guns should not be terribly easy to acquire, but stiffer and stiffer gun laws hurt only the law-abiding citizens. Criminals will get guns on the black market, where no one obeys the law anyway (hence the name “black market”). It seems to me that if it were possible, the Democratic Party would abolish all guns. Yet, doing so would be absolutely ludicrous. If our right to own guns were taken away, then it would be only a matter of time before we lost other rights as well.

There are innumerous other reasons to vote Republican. Certainly, I cannot mention them all in one meager column. I will inform you that the Republican Party is not elitist, as the liberals would have you believe. In fact, the opposite is true.

If you believe as I do, that power belongs to the people and not to the politicians in Washington, then perhaps, you might consider taking that power back today by voting Republican.
