One candidate is better

David Roberts
The end is in sight for this campaign season. In just a paltry nine days we’ll be going to the voting booth to elect candidates into a variety of offices. This is not a matter to be taken lightly. Previously, I’ve made salient points on the most important issues. Now, it is time to discuss the single most important factor of this election — integrity.

Much to the chagrin of our great nation, Clinton has desecrated the presidency and embarrassed the American people. Democrats and Republicans alike will admit this is true. What disturbs me, however, is the attitude of complacency that people display concerning this point. It is as if people just accept the fact that we have a shameless buffoon in the Oval Office. This does not have to be.

We are blessed with the right to vote. Ergo, we should exercise that right vigorously — lest we find ourselves losing it. Is Clinton’s scandalous behavior reprehensible? Absolutely. What can we do to ensure this nation doesn’t go through such an embarrassment again? Elect a president who is of upstanding and noble character. George W. Bush is such a man. Al Gore is not.

Gore’s lucid ties to Clinton automatically put him at a disadvantage here. For example, during the Clinton impeachment, Gore had the audacity to defend Clinton. Furthermore, he impudently predicted that Clinton would be hailed as one of the nation’s greatest presidents. That is absolutely laughable. What was he thinking? Also, his multitudinous lies and incidents of scandal do nothing to demonstrate that he is a man of noble virtue and intent.

Contrast that with George W. Bush. What scandals can be tied to him? By what myriad of lies can he be publicly disgraced? While we scratch our heads in wonderment, I should mention that there will always be skeptics. I can hear the incredulous liberal asking, “So what if Gore has told a lie? You can’t tell me that Bush has never lied.” While I cannot prove that Bush has never lied, I cannot prove that he has lied either.

Most of the independents look at the presidential voting process to be the selection of the lesser of two evils.
Nevertheless, it is not difficult to determine which candidate is the lesser of two evils. Whereas Gore promises to throw plenty of money into government programs for which many of us will never be eligible, Bush promises to empower the people. Whereas Gore is a notorious liar, Bush has not been caught in any web of deceits. Whereas Gore can be associated with a variety of scandals, Bush’s record is squeaky clean.

Many of us who are determined to vote may still have doubts in our mind concerning who will get our vote.
Some have found the debates to be unenlightening, claiming that there wasn’t a lot of difference between the candidates. If that is your opinion, and if you still haven’t gotten clear insight into the issues, then at very least consider the character issue. Bob Dole tried to point that out in the last election. Of course, we did not heed him and were promptly bombarded with four more years of Clinton scandal and embarrassment.
This nation is tired of the shame that has been brought upon the presidency. It’s time to elect a man of honor. It’s time to elect George W. Bush.
