| TASK 3 | ||||||||||
| It is now time to examine the titles of these works. The first thing that you will need to do is think about each one of these titles and turn them into a question. For example, you might ask yourself, "Who is Lonely in Jersey City" or, "Where would I Find A Clean, Well-Lighted Place." After asking yourself these questions about the titles amongst others, I then want you to delve into the texts of these works and figure out how the text supports each one of these titles. Refer to specific lines or phrases and figure out how they relate to the titles. Construct one paragraph on, "Loneliness in Jersey City" explaining how the title fits into the rest of the work. Cite the text to explain your stance. Then do the same for, "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" and also cite specific parts from the text. After these paragraphs, I want you to create your own alternative title for each one of these works, and then write a sentence or two on each, explaining how you came up with your own title. Hints: For, "Loneliness in Jersey City" examine the first line, and the last line. By the way, a daschund is a small dog developed for hunting badgers. For, "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" pay attention to what the friendly waiter has to say. |

| Part Two: "A picture is worth a thousand words" From the titles that you created, and from the original titles of these works, you must draw one picture that represents, "A Clean Well-Lighted Place" and another portraying, "Loneliness in Jersey City." Next to each picture that you've drawn will be one to two lines directly from the poem, and one to two sentences directly from the short story that you feel give the greatest support to the titles of these works. As the worlds worst artist, my expectations of your drawing abilities are not very high. However, draw with great detail. I want to see exactly how you view, "A Clean-Well Lighted Place," and how you picture in your own mind, "Loneliness in Jersey City." |
