CLASS MATERIALS:

Microeconomics: A Contemporary Introduction, 6ed, McEachern, Southwestern Publishing. There is also a study guide to accompany the text which is recommended but not required.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the completion of this course students will be expected to have and demonstrate an understanding of the following:

Define economics. Describe the basic difference between the study of microeconomics and macroeconomics. Define the fundamental problem of economics � scarcity.

List and describe economic resources (the factors of production;), including capital, labor, land, and business enterprise (entrepreneurship). Define economic theories and methods. Define basic features of economic models. Define the concept of opportunity cost. Discuss the principles of specialization, comparative advantage, and exchange.

List the three basic economic questions. Define demand, the law of demand, and factors which change demand. Define supply, the law of supply, and factors which change supply. Explain market equilibrium and the theory of price formation. Explain the role of households, firms, governments and the rest of the world in a nation's economy. Discuss elasticity concepts of demand and supply. Discuss concepts of consumer choice and demand, especially that of consumer utility. Describe short and long-run cost and production concepts relative to the individual firm. Describe perfect competition model concepts of the firm under various conditions. Describe monopoly model concepts of the firm and related issues. Describe monopolistic competition and oligopoly model concepts of the firm and related issues. Discuss resource demand and supply concepts. Discuss labor market concepts and wage determination. Discuss the economic role of the entrepreneur in our society. Discuss the role of collective bargaining in our economy. Discuss the role of capital, interest, and corporate finance in our economy. Discuss the role of government in regulating monopolies and related antitrust issues. Discuss how society deals with externalities in our economy, especially as it pertains to the environment. Discuss income distribution and poverty issues in our society. Discuss concepts of international trade. Discuss social roles of firms in the economy.

These topics follow the topics of the chapters. Some chapters may not be covered extensively in class. However you are responsible for reading all assigned materials and preparing for each chapter, regardless of whether it is discussed in the classroom or not.

ATTENDANCE: Class will only meet 20 times, and the last class meeting will be the final exam, so missing one, or a portion of one, class will be a considerable loss of the overall classroom experience. Repeated absences, without prior approval or a pressing emergency, will result in the reduction of your grade. Attendance will be taken at the start of each class. Excused absences will not affect your grade, but please contact me prior to your anticipated absence if possible
 

EVALUATION:   Your final grade in the class will be based on the following:
