The Rhine River Tour |

We started our tour in the village of Mainz. We say village, but it is really a very good size city. This is where the Main River and the Rhine meet and the Rhine changes direction. The area from Mainz to Cologne is famous for its' Castles and Wine. In the 11th century it was widely traveled by royalty going north. The castles were built not only to protect the travellers, but also as Imperial custom fortresses.They had ten stopping points at which they had to pay a toll. Pictures really can't do justice to this area. You could spend two weeks here and still not see everything that counts.All the villages are small and have something to offer.
Our first stop is the Burg Reichenstein in the village of Trechtingshausen. Part of it has been turned into a Hotel and restaurant with a museum.The museum has an impressive collection of weaponry and armor.Our next stop is Oberwesel, home of the Shonburg Castle. Then on to St. Goar. Here we stopped to sample some of the regional wines.We stopped for the night in the village of Andernach. It seemed easier to navigate than the city of Koblenz. As we were trying to find a hotel, we stumbled onto the old part of the village. We ended up staying at the Rhein Hotel. The owners were exceptional people and we had a very nice room for a good price.The next morning we drove to Bonn and crossed the river to come back down the other side... |
