Smithsonian Hut

Built in 1908 by the Smithsonian Institute to protect their scientists doing research at the peak.

The site of a deadly lightning accident on July 14, 1990.  Matthew E. Nordbrock was killed and three other were seriously injured when lightning struck the structure. The victims successfully sued the US Government.  The structure has subsequently been fitted with lightning rods visible on the roof is this photo.
